History and Prominence.

The University of Pennsylvania (Penn or UPenn) is a private Ivy League research university located in Philadelphia. Penn is the fourth oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.

Benjamin Franklin, Penn’s founder, and first president, advocated an educational program that trained leaders in commerce, government, and public service, similar to a modern liberal arts curriculum. Penn offers a unique education experience: a comprehensive liberal arts and sciences education that focuses on academic excellence and prepares students for a wide range of professional fields.

Penn is one of the eight members of the Ivy League, and it is also one of the colonial colleges. It has produced many distinguished alumni, including U.S. Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Nobel Prize laureates, Fulbright Scholars, MacArthur Fellows, Rhodes Scholars, Marshall Scholars, diplomats, politicians, businesspeople, architects, entertainers, journalists, athletes and scientists.

The university has also been home to some of America’s greatest thinkers such as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, James Wilson, and John Jay. Penn State University is one of the largest universities in the United States with over 47,000 students enrolled at its main campus in State College, Pennsylvania.

Penn State is also home to 20 Commonwealth Campuses located throughout Pennsylvania which offer two-year associate degrees and four-year baccalaureate degrees. In total, Penn State educates over 84,000 students across its various campuses.

The University Park campus, which is the flagship campus, is ranked as the Second best public university in the northeastern United States. Penn State’s Wharton College of Business is also highly regarded, having been ranked as the seventh best undergraduate business school in the nation by Bloomberg.

The University of Pennsylvania is a well-renowned institution with a long history dating back to its founding by Benjamin Franklin in 1740. It remains one of the most prestigious universities in not only America but also in the world.

Colonial Beginnings.

The University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1740 by a group of prominent Philadelphia citizens. Penn’s charter was unique in that it allowed the University to grant degrees in all subjects, instead of limiting it to theology or law.

The University’s first buildings were located near the present-day site of Independence Hall, and the school quickly became an important center of intellectual life in the colonies. Among Penn’s early students were Benjamin Franklin and John Adams.

In 1779, the University moved to its current location on the west side of Philadelphia. Today, Penn is one of the leading research universities in the world, with an enrollement of just over 40,000.

The University’s impact on the city of Philadelphia is immeasurable, and its colonial beginnings continue to shape its present and future.

The Revolutionary War.

The University of Pennsylvania played an important role in the Revolutionary War. Located in Philadelphia, which was then the capital of the United States, Penn was a hotbed of political activity.

Many of the Founding Fathers, including Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, were associated with the university. Penn was also where the Continental Congress met to declare independence from Great Britain.

During the war, Penn served as a hospital for wounded soldiers and a training ground for recruits. In addition, its library and museum were used as resources by the Continental Army.

After the war, Penn became one of the leading educational institutions in the country and continues to play a vital role in American life today.
