The History of Princeton University.

Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton, New Jersey. Founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, Princeton is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.

The school moved to Newark in 1747, then to Princeton in 1756, and was renamed Princeton University in 1896. Princeton provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering.

Princeton has produced many notable alumni, including U.S. presidents James Madison and Woodrow Wilson, U.S. Supreme Court justices Oliver Ellsworth and Samuel Alito, and Nobel laureates Toni Morrison, John Nash Jr., and Joshua Lederberg.

Princeton has also been associated with 22 National Medal of Science winners, 14 Turing Award laureates (the most of any university), 24 MacArthur Fellows (the second-most of any university), and 20 Pulitzer Prize winners.

The university has an endowment of $25.4 billion as of 2020, making it the largest endowment per student in the world. Princeton also has the largest academic library system in the world. With six million items plus digital resources accessible on-site and online, Princeton’s library system is far larger than that of any other American university.
