As the world becomes increasingly complex, countries are looking for new and innovative ways to cooperate. In a sign of this, Australia and the United States have held their annual strategic policy dialogue. This allowed the two countries to discuss security issues in the Indo-Pacific region and ways to enhance multilateral cooperation.

The dialogue is seen as a sign of the increasing complexity of the world, and both countries are looking for new and innovative ways to cooperate. It is hoped that the cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow and develop, in order to face the challenges of the future.

US Governement Statement.

The Governments of the United States and Australia held their annual Strategic Policy Dialogue (SPD) on November 21–22 in Canberra. The SPD, established in 2019, is a forum for Australia and the United States to deepen collaboration to address growing strategic challenges, including on deterrence, arms control and nonproliferation in the Indo-Pacific region. The U.S. delegation was co-chaired by Ms. Mallory Stewart, Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance, Department of State; and Dr. Vipin Narang, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Department of Defense. The Australian side was co-chaired by Ms. Ciara Spencer, First Assistant Secretary International Security, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; and Dr. Peter Sawczak, First Assistant Secretary Strategic Policy, Department of Defense.

During this SPD meeting, Australia and the United States discussed the security environment in the Indo-Pacific and ways to enhance multilateral cooperation in the region, and shared perspectives on their respective strategies, including the U.S. National Defense Strategy (NDS), the U.S. Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), the U.S. Missile Defense Review (MDR), and Australia’s defense and foreign policy strategies. The United States and Australia also identified opportunities to work together to deter security threats and coordinate regional messaging.

The two sides reaffirmed the value of the SPD, the fourth since the dialogue was established, as a policy forum that strengthens our ability to work together in support of regional security in the Indo-Pacific. The SPD will convene again in 2023.

By meeting annually the US and Australia are able to work through differences in approach while hearing what changes may have happened in strategy since a change of government.

This meeting allowed the two countries to discuss security issues in the Indo-Pacific region and ways to enhance multilateral cooperation. The dialogue is seen as a sign of the increasing complexity of the world, and both countries are looking for new and innovative ways to cooperate.

These meetings are a particularly important was of avoiding international tensions over arms deals, major industry deals, etc.

It is hoped that the cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow and develop, in order to face the many and growing challenges that are facing the world.
