Johnson & Johnson’s History: 1886 to Today.

In 1886, three brothers—Robert Wood Johnson I, James Wood Johnson, and Edward Mead Johnson—founded a small business in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The company’s first products were ready-to-use surgical dressings they named “first aid kits.”

The brothers also noticed a need for antiseptic solutions and produced their own solution of carbolic acid, which they sold to hospitals and physicians.

The company’s first major expansion came in 1895 when it acquired a Canadian-based pharmaceutical business. This acquisition allowed the company to expand its product line, which included products such as adhesives, laxatives, and baby powder.

By 1899, the company had also begun producing its signature baby shampoo, which quickly became a hit with parents.
