IBM’s Early Years: 1911-1930s.

IBM was founded in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR) by trust businessman Charles Ranlett Flint. CTR was incorporated in New York, and the company’s name was changed to “International Business Machines” in 1924.

IBM grew during the great depression and even managed to support its staff with life insurance, survivor benefits, and paid vacations. In the 1930s, IBM created one of the first electronic multipliers, called the IBM 601. The IBM 601 was used by the U.S. Navy in World War II to help compute artillery firing tables.

IBM also developed a tabulating machine called the IBM 402 which was used by the U.S. Census Bureau in 1940 to help tabulate the massive volume of data collected in that year’s census. IBM continued to develop new products and technologies throughout the 1930s, laying the foundation for its future success.

WWII & Beyond: 1940s-1990s.

IBM’s Invasion of the Commercial Marketplace From the very beginning, IBM has been a company driven by innovation. In the early days, IBM focused on creating practical solutions for businesses, such as time clocks and meat-slicing machines. However, IBM really made its mark on the world in the 1940s with its involvement in World War II.

At the time, IBM facilities were placed at the disposal of the U.S. government, and IBM’s product line expanded to include bombsights, rifles, and engine parts. The war also pushed forward IBM’s early work in computing. The Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator, also called the Mark I, was completed in 1944 after six years of development with Harvard University.

After the war, IBM shifted its focus back to the commercial marketplace and continued to release groundbreaking products, such as the IBM 702 mainframe computer in 1952 and the IBM Selectric typewriter in 1961.

On April 1st, 1993 IBM appointed its first outsider as Chairman and CEO. Louis V. Gerstner, Jr had a significant impact on the company by changing the focus toward customers. This led to some novel public events including when IBM’s Deep Blue computer beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a 6 game match in New York.

Into the Digital Age: 2000s.

The early 2000s were not IBM’s best years. In 2005, the company sold its personal computer business to Lenovo, a Chinese technology company. This was a blow to IBM, as the personal computer had been one of its most successful products.

However, IBM decided to focus on other areas of its business, and in 2014 it announced the sale of its x86 server division to Lenovo for $2.1 billion. This was seen as a positive move by IBM, as it allowed the company to focus on its more profitable businesses.

IBM has since rebounded and is now seen as a leader in the technology industry. Thanks to its focus on areas such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence, IBM is once again a thriving company.
