On March 14 2023 a 15-minute meeting took place between Minister HAYASHI and Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, Senior Vice-Rector of the United Nations University.
An outline of the meeting is as follows:
- Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi welcomed Prof. Marwala’s assumption of office as the Rector of the United Nations University and stated that Japan attaches great importance to strengthening its relationship with the United Nations University, which is the only United Nations organization headquartered in Japan.
- In response, Prof. Marwala expressed his appreciation for Japan’s support for the United Nations University and stated that he would like to further strengthen cooperation with Japan.
- They also discussed engagement with the “Global South” and responding to global issues.


About Professor Tshilidzi Marwala

On the 1st of March 2023, Professor Thokozani Marwala was appointed Rector of the United Nations University.
An esteemed scholar and educator who had previously served as vice-chancellor at a university in Johannesburg, professor Marwala has more than two decades worth of experience leading higher education institutions.
Further to his academic achievements as a postdoctoral fellow at Imperial College London and electrical engineering professor for Witwatersrand University, he also held trustee roles with Nelson Mandela Foundation and Nedbank board positions – making him an ideal choice for this prestigious position.
