Raffles’ rich history.

In 1819, a small port city on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula was founded. This city, known as Singapore, has grown and transformed over the past 200 years and is now one of the most prosperous cities in Southeast Asia.

At the heart of this transformation was Stamford Raffles, an ambitious British administrator who set out to develop this small port into a bustling trading hub.

Raffles’ vision for Singapore.

When Raffles first arrived in Singapore in 1819, he saw potential where no one else did. He envisioned transforming this sleepy fishing village into a major trading center that would be open to all traders regardless of race or religion.

To accomplish his vision, Raffles proposed several radical measures, such as abolishing slavery and giving freedom of trade to all merchants who chose to do business in Singapore. He also proposed setting up strong government institutions that could help maintain law and order in the city.

The impact of Raffles’ vision.

Raffle’s vision for Singapore paid off almost immediately. Thanks to his measures, merchants from all over Asia began flocking to Singapore looking for opportunities to do business in this new port city.

With increased trade came increased wealth and prosperity for many people living in Singapore. The influx of new money also allowed Raffles to invest heavily in infrastructure development such as roads, ports, and public buildings which further improved the economy and made life easier for everyone living in Singapore.

The stunning Long Bar at Raffles Hotel is also known for being the birthplace of the Singapore Sling cocktail.

During World War II, Raffles Hotel was used as a base by Japanese soldiers. They renamed Syonan Ryokan and it was eventually taken back by the British Navy in 1945. The hotel underwent $160 million of renovations in 1989 and was re-opened to guests in 1991.

Inside, however, the building has been renovated multiple times to reflect changing tastes and styles – from Art Deco influences during its heyday in the 1930s to contemporary modern touches today.

Its numerous courtyards are also filled with lush greenery that gives visitors a sense of tranquillity amidst the hustle and bustle of Singapore’s city life.
