BOC Takes Action against Smuggling Activity in Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) announced on Thursday that it successfully seized smuggled cigarettes worth PHP18.25 million in a joint maritime operation conducted in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte.

Collaborative Effort with Naval Forces

In a remarkable display of coordination, the BOC, in collaboration with Naval Forces, intercepted a jungkung—an illegal motorized wooden boat—carrying a substantial haul of 23,400 reams of illicit cigarettes. This operation took place in the vicinity of Barangay Camudmud on Sunday evening, July 9.

Warrant of Seizure and Detention Issued

District Collector Guillermo Pedro A. Francia IV wasted no time in taking action. He promptly issued a warrant of seizure and detention against the jungkung and its contraband cargo. According to the BOC, the seized items will be disposed of in accordance with prevailing Customs laws, rules, and regulations.

Crew Members Apprehended

Simultaneously, the ten crew members of the jungkung were apprehended and subsequently handed over to the Sasa Police Station in Davao City. The police will proceed with the necessary booking procedures and file appropriate charges against the suspects.

Commitment to Combating Illegal Activities

Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio reaffirmed the BOC’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal activities and safeguarding the safety and security of the citizens. Commissioner Rubio emphasized that this latest seizure serves as a testament to the BOC’s dedication to disrupting the illegal tobacco trade and protecting communities from its harmful effects.

Previous Successful Interception

Prior to this operation, the BOC achieved another significant victory against the illicit tobacco trade. On July 8, the BOC intercepted smuggled cigarettes worth approximately PHP7.3 million at the Zamboanga port.

Continuous Efforts to Protect Communities

Commissioner Rubio assured the public that the BOC will continue to work tirelessly in its mission to disrupt the illegal tobacco trade. By doing so, they aim to safeguard communities from the harmful effects of these illicit activities.

In conclusion

The Bureau of Customs’ recent joint maritime operation with Naval Forces resulted in the seizure of smuggled cigarettes worth PHP18.25 million in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte. With a steadfast commitment to combating illegal activities, the BOC remains dedicated to protecting communities and upholding the safety and security of its citizens.
