The Canadian province of British Columbia is currently grappling with a challenging wildfire season, prompting the Government of British Columbia to deploy all available provincial and local resources in response to fires ravaging the province.
In an effort to provide additional support, the Honourable Bill Blair, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness, has approved a Request for Federal Assistance.
Canadian Armed Forces Authorized to Provide Essential Aid
In response to the request, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence, has authorized the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to lend their expertise and resources in the battle against the raging wildfires.
The CAF has been given the green light to provide personnel and resources that will assist in fire-fighting efforts, enable mobility and logistical tasks such as evacuations of isolated communities, and offer planning and coordination support.
Canadian Coast Guard Steps Up Support
Joining the relief efforts, the Canadian Coast Guard is also playing a vital role in providing aid. The Coast Guard is deploying personnel to support the management, operations, and administrative activities of BC Wildfire Service’s Incident Command Posts.
Additionally, they are offering a maritime staging facility for fire-fighting equipment and personnel, along with two helicopters that will be utilized for the transportation of firefighters and equipment to remote locations. The Coast Guard’s assistance will also extend to providing support and aid to remote coastal communities in the event of restricted access.
Indigenous Services Canada Ensures First Nations’ Support
Recognizing the disproportionate impact of wildfires and extreme weather events on First Nations communities, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) is working closely with the Province of British Columbia, the First Nations Emergency Services Society of British Columbia, and the First Nations Health Authority.
ISC is providing funding through the Emergency Management Assistance Program (EMAP) to enhance capacity in preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery efforts, ensuring that First Nations have the necessary support to respond to emergency events and evacuations. ISC remains in close contact with affected First Nations to provide ongoing assistance and support during these challenging times.
Comprehensive Federal Support
Transport Canada, Parks Canada, Public Services and Procurement Canada, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are also prepared to offer additional assistance within their respective mandates, as needed. The collaborative efforts of these federal agencies demonstrate the comprehensive support provided to combat the wildfires and address the diverse needs arising from the crisis.
Government Operations Centre Coordinates Federal Assistance
The Government Operations Centre, responsible for coordinating the Government of Canada’s response to emergency events, is working closely with federal and provincial partners to ensure effective coordination of federal assistance in response to the situation in British Columbia.
Through interdepartmental consultation and coordination, this centralized entity is playing a pivotal role in managing the Request for Federal Assistance and facilitating a swift and efficient response.

Wildfire Facts and Government Response
Since the start of the season, British Columbia has experienced a staggering 1,062 wildfires, scorching over 1.26 million hectares of land—an alarming figure well above the seasonal average. These devastating wildfires have prompted a comprehensive response from the Government of Canada, with coordinated efforts to address the emergency.
The Government Operations Centre, in charge of managing emergency events, plays a crucial role in coordinating the federal response. Emergency management in Canada begins at the municipal level, and provinces or territories request assistance if required. In cases where the emergency surpasses provincial capabilities, the federal government steps in to provide support.
When a province or territory’s resources are overwhelmed by an emergency event, they initiate a Request for Federal Assistance. The process managed through the Government Operations Centre, involves consultation and coordination among provincial, territorial, and interdepartmental stakeholders.
When Canadian provinces require assistance, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) promptly responds through Operation LENTUS, which is their dedicated name for assisting in natural disasters within the country.
CAF support supplements local resources with specialized capabilities and personnel, aiming to stabilize the situation and provide reassurance to affected residents.
The number of CAF members deployed varies based on the tasks identified by the provinces, ensuring a tailored approach to the specific needs of each region.
The Government Operations Centre closely collaborates with Public Safety Canada’s regional offices, which provide regional input and perspective while supporting the coordination of the federal response. The regional offices’ extensive networks of officials, departments, agencies, communities, and stakeholders are essential in effectively addressing emergency events.
Through a united effort and a commitment to the safety and well-being of all Canadians, the Government of Canada stands alongside British Columbia in combating the devastating wildfires and supporting affected communities throughout the recovery and rebuilding process.
