A Year of Challenges for Sri Lanka
In a momentous meeting between Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the two leaders came together to discuss a range of critical issues, reflecting the deep-rooted friendship and longstanding historical connections between their nations.
President Wickremesinghe’s visit to India marks his first year in office, and Prime Minister Modi took this opportunity to extend heartfelt greetings to him and the people of Sri Lanka for facing the challenges of the past year with courage.
Building on Ancient Ties and Shared Visions
PM Modi emphasized the profound and ancient ties between India and Sri Lanka, affirming that Sri Lanka holds a crucial place in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and “SAGAR” vision.
The leaders engaged in fruitful discussions on bilateral, regional, and international matters, underscoring the intertwined security interests and development goals of both countries.
Cooperation and understanding were highlighted as essential factors in navigating shared challenges while respecting each other’s safety and sensitivities.
Forging a Vision for Economic Partnership
As a testament to their commitment to mutual growth, the two nations adopted a vision document for Economic Partnership. This comprehensive vision aims to bolster connectivity in various aspects, including maritime, air, energy, and people-to-people relations.
The partnership seeks to accelerate cooperation in vital sectors such as tourism, power, trade, higher education, and skill development, reflecting India’s long-term dedication to Sri Lanka’s progress.
New Avenues for Collaboration
During their talks, both leaders decided to commence discussions on the Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement, which promises to unlock fresh possibilities for trade and economic cooperation between the two nations.
Recognizing the importance of improved connectivity, they agreed to enhance air travel between India and Sri Lanka and to introduce Passenger Ferry Services between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Kanke-Santhurai in Sri Lanka.
Additionally, a boost in infrastructural connectivity is expected through expedited work on connecting the electricity grids between the two countries.
Furthermore, a feasibility study will be conducted for a petroleum pipeline to strengthen energy ties, and a land bridge’s feasibility will also be examined. In a significant technological step, Fintech connectivity will be heightened with the launch of UPI in Sri Lanka, fostering smoother financial transactions.
Humanitarian Approaches and Reconciliation
President Wickremesinghe and PM Modi addressed the livelihood challenges faced by fishermen and emphasized the importance of a humane approach to finding solutions. The leaders also discussed reconstruction and reconciliation efforts in Sri Lanka, with President Wickremesinghe sharing his inclusive approach.
India expressed its hope that the Government of Sri Lanka will fulfill the aspirations of the Tamil community, ensuring equality, justice, and peace. Commitments to implementing the Thirteenth Amendment and conducting Provincial Council Elections were also reiterated.
A Special Year for Bilateral Relations
The present year holds exceptional significance as India and Sri Lanka celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. Concurrently, the Indian-origin Tamil community is commemorating 200 years of its presence in Sri Lanka.
In light of these momentous occasions, India announced projects worth INR 75 crores for the Indian-origin Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka, showcasing its commitment to their welfare. Additionally, India will contribute to development programs in Sri Lanka’s northern and eastern regions.
Shared Interests in a Stable and Prosperous Region
In concluding remarks, PM Modi emphasized that a stable, secure, and prosperous Sri Lanka is not only in India’s interest but also in the entire Indian Ocean Region’s interest. He assured President Wickremesinghe and the people of Sri Lanka that India stands in solidarity with them during challenging times.
As the meeting concluded, the reaffirmation of their friendship and strategic collaboration promises a future of stronger bilateral ties and a shared vision for regional progress and prosperity.
