Unveiling a Connectivity Milestone

In a groundbreaking development, the Minister for the Digital Economy and Communication, Ginny Andersen, has announced a monumental stride towards bridging connectivity gaps that have long impacted New Zealand’s regional landscape.

Millions of dollars in Government investment have culminated in the realization of enhanced connectivity along one of the nation’s largest State Highway mobile black spots. The achievement comes in the form of a new fiber cable linking Te Anau and Milford Sound, promising unparalleled resilience and future-proofed connectivity.

Pioneering a Resilient Future

Ginny Andersen, speaking of this transformative initiative, emphasized the pivotal role this newly completed fiber cable plays in fortifying New Zealand’s connectivity fabric and especially improved rural broadband.

“In the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, the significance of reliable mobile and internet services has never been more evident. This telecommunications milestone, brought to fruition through the backing of the Government’s $35.4 million Westland connectivity package, marks a resounding triumph for regional New Zealand,” Andersen stated.

Improved Rural Broadband

Embarking on an expansive telecommunications infrastructure project, spanning about 118km across some of New Zealand’s most challenging terrains between Te Anau and Milford Sound, holds the promise of a monumental shift in regional connectivity.

The introduction of this revolutionary broadband and mobile service catalyst introduces the potential to transform not only local businesses and households nestled along the fiber route but also the countless visitors who make the weekly journey between Te Anau and Milford Sound.

Catalyzing Growth and Viability

Ginny Andersen underscored the far-reaching implications of this newly established fiber link. “We’re committed to creating an environment where key sectors, such as agriculture and tourism, can flourish through high-speed connectivity.

This fiber cable is poised to attract businesses and skilled professionals seeking rapid and dependable internet connections to the region. Its presence opens up exciting prospects for local enterprises and establishes the area as an enticing haven for remote workers,” Andersen affirmed.

Redefining the Connectivity Landscape

The installation of the fiber cable is accompanied by the construction of more than seven mobile towers along the route.

This strategic intervention notably curtails the length of road with inadequate mobile coverage—an achievement that remarkably addresses one of the country’s most substantial State Highway mobile black spots.

A Testament to Nationwide Commitment

The heightened capacity and enhanced resilience brought forth by these new fiber links stand as a resounding testament to the Government’s unwavering dedication to bolstering critical telecommunications infrastructure nationwide.

This commitment revolves around reinforcing connectivity in rural and regional New Zealand.

Charting a Pioneering Path

Ginny Andersen’s affirmation of the Government’s commitment resounded with a forward-looking promise.

“The presence of this new fiber link serves as an unequivocal pledge to ensure that rural homes, businesses, and communities can access high-speed broadband connectivity, regardless of their geographical location.”

“With nearly $2.6 billion invested over the past decade, and buoyed by recent budget allocations and the earmarking of 3.5 GHz radio spectrum for 5G services, regional and rural New Zealand stands poised to reap the rewards of improved connectivity for years to come,” Andersen concluded.
