Ahead of Schedule: Breakthrough at South Ghawar Operational Area
Aramco, a global leader in integrated energy and chemicals, has achieved a groundbreaking feat by successfully producing the first unconventional tight gas from its South Ghawar operational area, accomplishing this milestone two months ahead of schedule.
Strategy in Motion: Gas Production Surge and Expansion Plans
This achievement aligns with Aramco’s ambitious strategy to substantially increase gas production by more than 50% from 2021 levels through 2030, contingent upon domestic demand. The commissioned facilities at South Ghawar boast a processing capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet per day for raw gas and 38,000 barrels per day for condensate.
To meet the increasing demand for gas, the company commits to double the overall processing capacity, aiming to deliver 750 million standard cubic feet per day of raw gas soon.
Nasir Al-Naimi’s Perspective: Milestone Signifying Progress
Nasir Al-Naimi, Aramco Upstream President, expressed the significance of this achievement, stating,
“This first production of unconventional tight gas from South Ghawar is a milestone that demonstrates real progress on our gas expansion strategy.”
Al-Naimi emphasized the strategic role of this expansion in meeting the Kingdom’s requirements for lower-emission energy. Additionally, he highlighted its significance in supporting growth in the chemicals sector. He commended the dedication of Aramco’s workforce, underscoring their ability to commence production ahead of schedule and below budget.
South Ghawar’s Role: A Key Player in Gas Production
The successful production of tight sand gas at South Ghawar marks Aramco’s second unconventional gas stream, following the initiation of production at the North Arabia field in 2018. In that instance, 240 million standard cubic feet per day were delivered to customers in Wa’ad Al-Shamal.
Simultaneously, work is underway at the giant Jafurah unconventional gas field, recognized as the largest liquid-rich shale gas play in the Middle East.
This breakthrough at South Ghawar exemplifies Aramco’s commitment to pushing boundaries in the energy sector, showcasing not only operational efficiency but also strategic foresight in addressing the Kingdom’s energy needs and contributing to global sustainability goals.
