In a significant move towards national reconciliation, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. expressed his welcome to the amnesty granted by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to eligible members of various rebel and insurgent groups.
This historic decision, marked by Executive Order (EO) No. 47 (s. 2023), signifies the administration’s commitment to internal security and stability.
Teodoro emphasized the DND’s full support for the government’s efforts to advance reconciliation and healing from longstanding armed conflicts that have divided the nation.
“The granting of amnesty offers an invaluable opportunity for our brothers and sisters to transform their lives, avail [of] government services, and rejoin their families and communities,”
he added, calling for the support of all Filipinos in this crucial endeavor.
Meanwhile, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. echoed his support and welcomed the grant of amnesty to members of various insurgent groups, including the Communist Party of the Philippines-New Peoples’ Army-National Democratic Front, Rebolusyonaryong Partido ng Manggagawa/Revolutionary Proletarian Army/Alex Boncayao Brigade, Moro Islamic Liberation Front, and Moro National Liberation Front.
Amnesty Paves the Way for Peace and Unity
Brawner emphasized that this move is a significant step towards ending armed conflicts, bringing closure to hostilities, and aligning with the government’s call for peace, unity, and reconciliation.
He expressed confidence that the grant of amnesty will foster an atmosphere conducive to achieving just, comprehensive, and enduring equanimity while addressing other pressing challenges faced by the country.
In these unprecedented steps towards national reconciliation, both Teodoro and Brawner foresee a future where former rebels can reintegrate into society, leaving behind the shadows of armed conflict for a brighter, more peaceful Philippines.
