The 16th United States-Mongolia Annual Bilateral Consultations, a cornerstone of the United States-Mongolia Strategic Third Neighbor Partnership, recently convened in Washington, D.C. This important meeting, held on December 12, symbolizes the ongoing commitment and collaboration between these two nations.
The dialogue, co-chaired by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel J. Kritenbrink and Mongolian State Secretary Ankhbayar Nyamdorj, brought together high-ranking officials from both countries. Attendees included U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia Richard Buangan and Mongolian Ambassador to the U.S. Batbayar Ulziidelger, alongside representatives from various U.S. departments and Mongolian officials.
Celebrating 36 Years of Diplomatic Relations
2023 marks the 36th year of U.S.-Mongolia diplomatic ties, a journey reflecting mutual respect and shared goals. A highlight of this year was the meeting between U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Mongolian Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai. This encounter underlined the shared intent to fortify dialogue and cooperation for the well-being of both nations’ peoples.
Democracy, Regional Development, and Peace
Central to the discussions were themes of democracy, regional development, and peace, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. The delegations exchanged ideas on fostering a prosperous and peaceful future, emphasizing the role of the international community in securing global peace, including through UN peacekeeping efforts. The U.S. applauded Mongolia’s dedication to empowering women in peacekeeping roles.
Addressing Global Challenges
The urgent security situation in Haiti and the war in Ukraine were key concerns. Both sides expressed deep worry over the humanitarian impact of these crises, reiterating their commitment to international law and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
They also urged the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to abide by UN Security Council Resolutions, highlighting diplomacy as essential for lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Economic Cooperation and Sustainable Development
The Economic Cooperation Roadmap for the Strategic Third Neighbor Partnership, signed in August 2023, was a significant topic. Discussions focused on advancing economic collaboration, capacity building, trade, investment climate improvement, climate resilience, agriculture, supply chain security, and small and medium enterprise development. Special attention was given to the potential of critical minerals and clean energy.
Enhancing Digital and Space Cooperation
The delegations agreed to boost collaboration in digital domains and space, aiming to strengthen connectivity, prosperity, and cybersecurity. The entry into force of the bilateral Air Transport Agreement was noted as a positive step towards launching direct flights between the two countries.
Upholding Democratic Values and Human Rights
A strong commitment to democratic values, the rule of law, good governance, anti-corruption efforts, and human rights protection was reaffirmed. Both nations intend to foster people-to-people ties through educational exchanges, tourism, and cultural initiatives, including promoting English language learning in Mongolia.
Looking Forward
The U.S. and Mongolia resolved to continue high-level bilateral visits, with the next Annual Bilateral Consultations scheduled for 2024 in Ulaanbaatar.
