Sellafield Ltd has announced a significant funding boost for local environmental projects in West Cumbria, injecting over £460,000 into community and restoration initiatives through its Social Impact Multiplied (SiX) program. This move marks a substantial commitment to the region’s ecological and social well-being.
Vital Support for ‘People on the Keekle’ Project
Enhancing Longlands Lake and Surrounding Areas
Over the last three years, the SiX program has already provided substantial support to the West Cumbria Rivers Trust. With over £229,000 in funding, the ‘People on the Keekle’ initiative has seen transformative changes around Longlands Lake near Cleator Moor. The project has successfully created forest school areas and workshops for local children, improved wildlife habitats, and stabilized the river Ehen.
Expanded Funding for New Endeavors
Extending the Reach to Dub Beck and Mirehouse Pond
Recognizing these achievements, Sellafield Ltd is now extending its funding by an additional £463,647 for the next three years. This extended support will allow further enhancements at Longlands Lake and kickstart new projects at Dub Beck near Keekle and Mirehouse Pond in Whitehaven. Dub Beck will see crucial riverbank restoration, while Mirehouse Pond will benefit from improved public access and new seating areas.
A Commitment to Thriving Communities
Addressing Environmental and Social Issues
Gary McKeating, head of community and development at Sellafield Ltd, emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering thriving communities. He highlighted the positive impact of the project in areas like Mirehouse, following successful results at Longlands Lake. The SiX program aligns with Sellafield’s objective of addressing social and environmental issues in the community.

Leveraging Employee Engagement for Environmental Good
Martin Clough, head of environmental management at Sellafield Ltd, expressed satisfaction in supporting projects that enhance environmental amenities for the community.
