ToggleCrafting New Futures in Negros Occidental
In Bacolod City, a unique initiative is taking shape as former New People’s Army rebels and farmers from Barangay Riverside, Isabela, in Negros Occidental, are learning to create crafts, forging new paths for their livelihoods.
Empowering Communities Through Craftsmanship
Training for Sustainable Livelihoods
The Association of Negros Producers (ANP), known for organizing the prestigious Negros Trade Fair, has facilitated product development and basic marketing workshops for about 100 participants. Held at the headquarters of the Philippine Army’s 62nd Infantry Battalion, these workshops aim to equip individuals with skills to create marketable products and participate in industry showcases.
Utilizing Local Resources
Participants are being trained to use locally abundant raw materials like pandan, nito, bamboo, and used straws, transforming them into valuable products. From pandan weavers developing eco-friendly bags targeting wine producers and millennials to eco-friendly stores, the initiative highlights the potential of local resources in creating sustainable livelihood options.
The Journey of Product Development
Learning from Industry Experts
Firstly, Christina Marie Gaston, an international designer and chairwoman of ANP, imparted her invaluable experience with Hacienda Crafts Company, thereby inspiring participants in their craft-making journey. Following this, Sybel Nobleza, ANP’s external affairs manager, provided essential insights on product screening and basic marketing. Consequently, she expertly guided the participants in aligning their products with customer needs and crafting compelling narratives for each creation.
Overcoming Challenges
Furthermore, recognizing the significant hurdles faced by former rebels and farmers in transitioning to entrepreneurship, Nobleza underscored key solutions. She focused on strategies such as securing start-up capital, ensuring consistent market access, and protecting the identities of these new entrepreneurs. Importantly, these strategic directions are crucial in ensuring the sustainability and success of their burgeoning business ventures.
Showcasing Craftsmanship at Negros Trade Fair
Preparing for Prestigious Showcases
The participants are gearing up to introduce their product prototypes at the Pilak Awards Competition, as a precursor to their participation in the 38th Negros Trade Fair later this year. This exposure is a significant opportunity for them to showcase their newfound skills and enter the wider market.
A Story of Transformation
Nanay Adelfa, a 78-year-old weaver and participant, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to become an entrepreneur through these training workshops. This initiative represents not just skill development but a transformation of lives and communities.
Future Plans and Expansion
Continued Support and Training
The ANP has committed to closely monitoring the product prototyping process and organizing further workshops to ensure the continuous growth and development of these new artisans.
Broadening the Horizon
In addition to craft-making, this month will also see the introduction of training in food product development in collaboration with the Provincial Technology and Livelihood Development Center, broadening the scope of opportunities for the participants.
