Overview of Mongolia’s Trade Landscape

ULAANBAATAR, January 22, 2024 – A new World Bank report casts light on the untapped potential of Mongolia in the global trade arena. Despite having a relatively open trade regime, Mongolia’s heavy reliance on mining exports and geographical challenges underscore the need for strategic diversification.

Key Challenges and Opportunities

Being landlocked and remote, Mongolia faces unique trade development challenges. The report, titled ‘Mongolia Trade Competitiveness Diagnostic’, identifies infrastructure and logistics bottlenecks as key impediments, alongside the limited capacity to meet international product standards.

Strategies for Trade Sector Development

To foster a thriving environment for tradable sectors, the report suggests more counter-cyclical policies for macroeconomic stability and competitiveness. Reducing tariffs on intermediate goods and improving logistics can significantly boost domestic producers’ productivity and competitiveness.

Enhancing Export Prospects

The agribusiness sector in Mongolia holds vast potential for growth, especially with improved compliance with health and hygiene standards. This could open new markets and increase the country’s presence in global value chains.

The World Bank’s Perspective

Taehyun Lee’s Insights

Taehyun Lee, the World Bank Country Manager for Mongolia, emphasizes the importance of continued trade policy and administration reforms. These changes are vital for leveraging Mongolia’s trade potential, serving as a catalyst for economic diversification and sustainable growth.

Focus on Digital Services

Expanding Digital Trade

Given its geographic and logistical constraints, Mongolia could benefit from expanding its digital services sector. Developing ICT infrastructure and aligning talent with digital demands are crucial steps. Strengthening cross-border digital cooperation and adhering to international regulatory requirements can bolster Mongolia’s position in the digital trade market.

Government’s Role in Digital Expansion

Support for digital services export firms in meeting international regulatory norms is key. The government’s proactive involvement can accelerate the growth of Mongolia’s digital trade, offering a diversified economic portfolio beyond traditional sectors.

Mongolia’s Path to Diversification

The World Bank report sheds light on the pivotal role of trade in Mongolia’s economic diversification. By addressing logistical challenges, adhering to international standards, and embracing digital opportunities, Mongolia can pave its way toward a more diversified and resilient economy.

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of Mongolia’s current trade situation as highlighted in the World Bank report. It outlines the challenges and potential strategies for Mongolia to diversify its economy and enhance its position in global trade, especially through digital services.
