A New Chapter in UK-Ghana Relations
At the ninth UK-Ghana Business Council held in Accra on January 31, 2024, the United Kingdom reaffirmed its commitment to deepening trade, investment, and economic transformation in Ghana. This significant event marked a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship, promising to accelerate mutual prosperity through enhanced trade and investment initiatives.
Bilateral Agreements Signal a Bright Future
The council witnessed the signing of crucial Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to further partnerships in key sectors such as automotive, animal systems, science, technology, and innovation. These agreements underscore the UK’s dedication to supporting Ghana’s economic recovery and growth, in line with the United Kingdom’s International Development White Paper.
A Testament to Enduring Friendship
Co-chaired by Ghana’s Vice President, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the UK’s Minister for State for Development and Africa, Rt. Hon. Andrew Mitchell MP, the council outlined specific actions to foster greater trade and investment. Minister Mitchell highlighted the significance of the new partnerships, particularly in the automotive sector and the Green Cities and Infrastructure programme, which aims to mobilize climate finance.
Collaboration for Economic Prosperity
The UK’s engagement extends beyond trade; furthermore, it includes a £5 million multi-country ODA-funded bilateral technical partnership on animal health. This initiative strengthens animal health systems in Africa, including Ghana, to enhance the resilience of the farming sector.
Additionally, over 228 communities in Ghana have already benefited, clearly illustrating the tangible impacts of these collaborations. These efforts demonstrate the UK’s commitment to making a positive difference in global agricultural and animal health practices.
Supporting Ghana’s Economic Recovery
Discussions with Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Finance, Hon. John Ampontuah Kumah, focused on Ghana’s economic recovery and progress on the IMF programme. Minister Mitchell also engaged on climate vulnerability, demonstrating the UK’s support for Ghana as the chair of the Climate Vulnerable Forum.
Addressing Regional Security and Democracy
Security was a key theme, with discussions on regional developments and Ghana’s role in bilateral and multilateral responses. The importance of democracy was also emphasized in meetings with Ghanaian MPs, highlighting the UK government’s commitment to supporting free, fair, and peaceful elections in Ghana.
Future Opportunities and Growth
The ninth UK-Ghana Business Council has set the stage for an exciting future, with both nations committed to creating opportunities that ensure shared growth and innovation. The partnerships forged and the initiatives launched are a testament to the dynamic and forward-looking relationship between the UK and Ghana.
