PM’s powerful statement commemorating the 76th anniversary of Israel’s independence, Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering support for the Jewish state’s right to exist and live in peace. The message highlighted the countries’ close friendship while addressing recent disturbing trends.
Longstanding Allies and Deep Community Ties
“Canada was among the first countries to recognize Israel’s independence in 1948, later establishing diplomatic relations in 1949,” Trudeau said.
He noted Canada’s nearly 400,000 Jewish citizens have strengthened the nation’s diversity and prosperity.
The PM underscored that
“the establishment of the State of Israel reflected the principle that Jewish people – like all peoples – have the right to determine their own future.”
He emphasized Canada’s steadfast backing: “We stand by it today.”
Condemning Hamas Attacks and Rising Antisemitism
However, Trudeau strongly condemned the
“Hamas’ brutal October 7 terrorist attacks” as “the deadliest attacks on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Immediately lay down its arms and release all hostages.”
The Prime Minister also addressed “a disturbing rise in antisemitism across the world, including right here in Canada.” Religious intimidation was declared unacceptable:
“Jewish Canadians deserve to feel safe, supported, and welcomed. They deserve to live openly and proudly Jewish lives, without intimidation or fear.”
Supporting a Negotiated Two-State Solution
While backing Israel’s security, Trudeau reiterated Canada’s “support for a two-state solution in which Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side with security and dignity, and without fear.”
He outlined federal initiatives to combat hate crimes and prevent extremism, including:
- The Security Infrastructure Program
- The Community Resilience Fund
- $273 million over six years through Canada’s Action Plan on Combatting Hate
An Enduring Partnership for Peace
In closing, the Prime Minister celebrated the independence anniversary, sending “regards on Israel Independence Day” and wishing “Yom Ha’atzmaut Sameach!”
Despite challenges, Trudeau’s statement highlighted Canada’s enduring partnership with Israel and the shared vision of a peaceful, negotiated resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
