The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) recently emphasized that it does not profit from convenience fees imposed on online payments.
Meralco’s Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications, Joe Zaldarriaga, stated,
“There is no charge if customers use Bayad e-wallet, and convenience fees for other providers go to our payment partners. We do not earn a single centavo from these convenience fees contrary to what was inaccurately stated.”

Addressing Legislative Concerns
This statement was prompted by House Committee on Legislative Franchise Vice Chair Rep. Johnny Pimentel’s call for Meralco to eliminate the PHP15 convenience fee per transaction for online payments. Pimentel claimed that the fee benefits Meralco’s sister unit, CIS Bayad Center, Inc.
Payment Channels and Fees
Zaldarriaga clarified that Bayad has waived fees for payments made through Meralco Online. Meanwhile, customers using e-wallets like GCash and Maya face PHP6 and PHP7 charges, respectively. Visa, Mastercard, and JCB card users incur a PHP15 fee. These charges ensure secure and reliable transactions, handled by Meralco’s payment partners.
Meralco Payment Details

Historical Context of Meralco’s Convenience Fees
Over time, Meralco’s approach to convenience fees has evolved:
- Pre-pandemic: A PHP47 fee was implemented to cover secure online payment service costs.
- May 2020: The PHP47 fee was waived during the COVID-19 pandemic to assist customers, encouraging online payments to minimize physical contact.
- July 2020: Meralco absorbed nearly PHP13 million in online fees to support customers during the pandemic.
Commitment to Customer Convenience
Meralco assures its customers that they have the freedom to choose their preferred, secure payment method when settling electricity bills.
Zaldarriaga reiterated,
“Our customers are empowered to use whichever secure payment channel they prefer when settling their electricity bills.”
Continuous Adaptation
Meralco has demonstrated a willingness to adapt its fee policies to meet customer needs and respond to market conditions.
Currently, convenience fees on the Meralco Mobile App are temporarily suspended, reflecting the company’s responsiveness to its customers’ financial situations.
In Conclusion
Meralco’s clarification highlights its commitment to transparency and customer service. The company remains dedicated to providing secure and convenient payment options, ensuring that convenience fees benefit payment partners and not Meralco itself.
This approach underscores Meralco’s ongoing efforts to adapt and support its customers in a dynamic environment.
