With a steadfast commitment to democratic values and human rights, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has taken a decisive stance, issuing a strong condemnation of the escalating repression in Venezuela under Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

Building on this commitment, consequently, Canada’s response to Venezuela’s deteriorating political situation is clear: namely, a reaffirmation of support for a peaceful resolution and democratic principles.

Furthermore, this stance aligns with Canada’s values of promoting democracy and human rights. Ultimately, Canada’s response demonstrates a consistent commitment to supporting the Venezuelan people.

Moreover, as the situation continues to worsen, Canada’s stance serves as a beacon of hope for the Venezuelan people.

Canada’s Stand on Venezuela

The recent presidential election in Venezuela has sparked international outcry due to its lack of transparency and the subsequent crackdown on opposition voices.

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, on behalf of the Canadian government, expressed deep concern over the situation, particularly the ongoing violence and arbitrary detentions that have followed the disputed July 28, 2024, election.

“Canada unequivocally condemns the ongoing and escalating repression in Venezuela,”

Joly stated, underscoring Canada’s disapproval of the actions taken by Maduro’s government. The Minister highlighted the alarming number of deaths, detentions, and enforced disappearances, particularly among the youth, who have courageously participated in demonstrations against the regime.

Calls for a Democratic Solution

Amidst the turmoil, Canada is not just voicing its disapproval but also calling for action. The Foreign Minister urged for a “peaceful, negotiated and Venezuelan-led solution” to resolve the crisis.

This solution must respect the Venezuelan people’s democratic will, as expressed in recent elections. Accordingly, Canada will collaborate with international partners, like the OAS, to facilitate dialogue and a peaceful transition. Ultimately, the goal is a more stable and democratic Venezuela.

Canada’s Main Demands:

  • Respect for Democratic Principles: Venezuela must ensure that all political candidates can participate freely in the electoral process without fear of persecution.
  • Accountability for Human Rights Violations: Canada continues to work with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to hold those responsible for crimes against humanity in Venezuela accountable.
  • Protection of Diplomatic Premises: The revocation of the protected status of the Argentine embassy in Caracas is unacceptable and a violation of international law.

These demands reflect Canada’s broader commitment to supporting democracy and human rights not just in Venezuela, but globally.

Canada’s Ongoing Sanctions

Canada’s stance against the Maduro regime is not new. Since 2017, Canada has maintained sanctions against Venezuelan officials, aiming to pressure the regime to respect democratic norms and human rights. These sanctions include:

Sanction

Details

Asset Freeze Targeted officials are prohibited from accessing assets within Canada.
Dealings Prohibition Canadian businesses are barred from engaging in transactions with sanctioned individuals.
Restrictions on Goods/Services Export or provision of certain goods and services to sanctioned persons is restricted.

As of August 2023, Canada had sanctioned 70 Venezuelan officials, reinforcing its commitment to international justice and the protection of human rights.

Diplomatic and International Response

In addition to sanctions, Canada is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to address the crisis. In August 2024, Canada joined 22 other countries and the European Union in issuing a joint statement on Venezuela.

This statement called for respect of democratic principles and human rights, the release of political detainees, and transparent verification of election results.

Canada’s diplomatic efforts also extend to supporting the protection of Venezuelan refugees and advocating for the return of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Venezuela.

The government’s stance is clear: the international community must hold Venezuela accountable for its actions.

Bottom Line

Canada’s response to the situation in Venezuela is a testament to its unwavering support for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Meanwhile, the crisis in Venezuela continues to escalate, and Canada stands firm in its call for a peaceful and democratic resolution.

Furthermore, Canada emphasizes the need for accountability and the protection of human rights at every level. In addition, through ongoing sanctions, diplomatic efforts, and collaboration with international bodies, Canada remains committed to supporting the Venezuelan people in their pursuit of a just and democratic society.

Ultimately, Canada’s actions demonstrate a long-term commitment to promoting democracy and human rights in Venezuela.
