The City of Phoenix, in collaboration with UMOM New Day Centers, has introduced nearly 100 new shelter beds dedicated to helping families experiencing homelessness.
This initiative provides immediate relief to families struggling to find stable shelter in Maricopa County, offering much-needed support and a path toward long-term stability.
A Community-Centered Response to a Growing Need
With homelessness among families rising, the addition of these shelter beds is a timely response to a critical issue in Phoenix. The redesign of former administrative offices into 20 shelter units with 96 beds allows the city to accommodate up to 80 families, including approximately 200 children, each year.
These units provide a secure, supportive environment where families can regain stability and access resources for a fresh start.
“This project is definitely one to celebrate, and it will no doubt have life-changing effects on all the families who pass through this shelter on their way to end their homelessness,”
said Mayor Kate Gallego.
She emphasized that the project showcases how partnerships, such as the one with UMOM, can help the city serve its most vulnerable residents more effectively.
Addressing Urgent Family Housing Needs
A recent city report revealed that approximately 358 families in Maricopa County are on waiting lists for shelters, often enduring weeks without a stable place to stay.
This initiative aims to reduce wait times and bridge the gap in family housing availability by leveraging city funds and support from community organizations.
The $2 million project was made possible through funds allocated by the Phoenix Housing Department under the HOME ARP program, which targets housing solutions for the city’s underserved communities.
“Today, we are not just opening the doors to a building with beds; we are opening the doors to new opportunities, new beginnings, and new possibilities for the single women and families who will find refuge here,” stated District 8 Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington.
Building a Foundation for Lasting Impact
Spencer Self, Director of the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department, underscored the project’s collaborative impact, noting that it represents “the power of collaboration” between city and community partners.
He highlighted that these efforts not only address immediate housing needs but also lay the groundwork for families to find permanent housing solutions and ultimately build more stable futures.
This new addition brings the total number of new beds added by the City of Phoenix in 2024 to 380, a significant milestone in its ongoing commitment to creating safe, accessible shelter options for all who need them.
Rachel Milne, Director of the Office of Homeless Solutions, expressed her appreciation for this latest project, stating,
“Everyone deserves a safe place to raise their family. This new space will help hundreds of families take the first step toward finding their permanent home.”
UMOM and City of Phoenix: Strengthening Community Ties
Jackson Fonder, CEO of UMOM, highlighted the organization’s commitment to the community and praised the city’s dedication to tackling homelessness.
“These new shelter beds will make a significant impact on the lives of families experiencing homelessness, not only by providing immediate relief but also by serving as a critical support system, promoting healthier, more stable futures.”
Through partnerships like this, Phoenix aims to establish itself as a supportive and resilient community, providing families with the shelter, resources, and support they need to thrive.
With this initiative, the City of Phoenix and UMOM set a strong example of how local partnerships can create real change for those most in need, reinforcing the city’s commitment to ensuring that every resident has the opportunity for stability and success.
