On November 16, 2024, Tucson residents gathered at Max’s Center Attractions to celebrate the completion of the vibrant “Sugar Hill” mural.
This striking piece of public art honors the rich history and culture of one of Tucson’s historic Black neighborhoods.
Designed by Detroit artist Ndubisi Okoye and brought to life with contributions from local artists and community members, the mural is the latest addition to the Thrive in the 05 initiative, a citywide effort to revitalize the 85705 zip code.
Thrive in the 05
Thrive in the 05 is a neighborhood enrichment program spearheaded by Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Department.
With a $1.5 million investment, it focuses on enhancing infrastructure, public spaces, and community engagement in the area bounded by Miracle Mile, Speedway, Stone Avenue, and I-10.
The Sugar Hill mural represents the initiative’s commitment to fostering pride and preserving history. Bold letters spelling “Sugar Hill” anchor the design, surrounded by vivid colors and patterns that reflect the neighborhood’s dynamic spirit.
Engaging the Community
The mural’s completion was a collaborative effort. Dozens of local residents joined artists Allison Miller and Jessi Moreno to paint the mural during a community celebration. This event not only brought people together but also solidified the neighborhood’s identity and shared vision for its future.
