A New Chapter for a Respected Journalist
For more than two decades, Christina Estes has been a trusted voice in Phoenix journalism. Now, she’s taking on a new role in public service.
Estes has joined Phoenix Vice Mayor Ann O’Brien’s office as Director of Communications, bringing her expertise in reporting and city affairs to a new platform—local government.
From the Newsroom to City Hall
Estes’ career has been deeply rooted in Phoenix. As a senior field correspondent for the city’s NPR member station, she spent nine years covering Phoenix City Hall, giving her unique insight into the city’s challenges and developments.
Her experience spans multiple Phoenix TV and radio stations, including ABC, CBS, PBS affiliates, KFYI, and KTAR. From presidential campaigns to public policy and business reporting, her award-winning journalism has made a lasting impact on the community.
A Commitment to Community Engagement
“For four years, I observed Vice Mayor O’Brien working closely with city staff, residents, and fellow leaders to address important issues,” Estes said.
“Her nonpartisan approach and dedication to meaningful change inspired me to contribute in a different way.”
Vice Mayor O’Brien echoed this enthusiasm, stating,
“Christina’s deep knowledge of city operations, passion for local government, and love for Phoenix will serve both my office and the city well.”
Vice Mayor O’Brien’s Vision for Phoenix
O’Brien, who was elected in 2020, has been a strong advocate for economic growth, public safety, and homelessness solutions.
She currently chairs the Economic Development and Housing Subcommittee, focusing on reducing bureaucracy to spur housing development—especially for first-time buyers.
Her efforts have also led to innovative programs such as:
- Establishing an alternative court system to support unhoused individuals and reduce incarceration rates.
- Promoting drone and AI technologies to aid first responders.
- Implementing a lockbox program to help emergency personnel access homes of seniors and individuals with disabilities safely.
The Role of Communications in City Government
In a rapidly growing city like Phoenix, clear and effective communication is essential. Estes’ background in journalism equips her to bridge the gap between local government and residents, ensuring transparency and accessibility.
Her role will focus on increasing public engagement, sharing vital city updates, and supporting the Vice Mayor’s initiatives.
