Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit to Kosovo and Serbia aims to bolster UK cooperation against irregular migration and organized crime, enhancing security ties in the Western Balkans.

This initiative is crucial for UK citizens as it seeks to improve border security, reduce crime, and ensure safer communities through technological advancements and international collaboration.

Strengthening Security Cooperation

The UK’s strategic move to enhance security cooperation with Serbia involves signing an Organised Immigration Crime agreement.

This agreement focuses on sharing information more effectively to combat organized crime networks that exploit migration routes.

By addressing these issues, the UK aims to protect its borders and ensure public safety. In Kosovo, UK-supplied technology is being deployed to detect illicit goods and track smuggling routes.

This technological intervention not only aids in curbing illegal activities but also strengthens the region’s overall security infrastructure. Such measures are vital for maintaining stability in areas prone to criminal exploitation.

Technological Innovations

  • Deployment of advanced detection systems in Kosovo
  • Tracking of smuggling routes using cutting-edge technology
  • Enhanced information sharing between UK and Serbian authorities
  • Focus on cybersecurity agreements with Serbia
  • Support for regional stability through diplomatic efforts

The Human Element: Addressing Trafficking

A significant aspect of this initiative is addressing human trafficking by meeting with survivors. Understanding their experiences provides valuable insights into combating such crimes effectively.

The UK’s commitment to tackling human trafficking underscores its dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

Migratory Challenges in the Western Balkans

The Western Balkans has become a critical transit route for irregular migration, with over 22,000 people recorded using this path last year alone.

The UK’s proactive approach includes removing more than 24,000 individuals without the right to stay since July, highlighting its commitment to managing immigration effectively.

International Summit Plans

The upcoming Berlin Process Summit hosted by the UK in Autumn 2025 will further support regional stability and security efforts.

This summit aims to foster international collaboration and address challenges related to migration and organized crime comprehensively.

Foreign Secretaries Comments

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said:

“Criminal gangs have long exploited instability in the Western Balkans, parts of which have become a major transit route for irregular migration and serious organised crime. They are risking lives for profit and becoming increasingly violent in their determination to make as much money as possible.

This diabolical, lawless trade of smuggling vulnerable people is completely unacceptable and we are determined to end it as we secure the UK’s borders under our Plan for Change.

With the world becoming more dangerous and unpredictable, the Western Balkans is of critical importance to the UK and Europe’s collective security, and the UK remains committed to building resilience and stability in the region.”
