Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York, on December 28, 1954. His mother, Lennis (née Lynch), was a beauty parlor owner and operator born in Georgia and partly raised in Harlem.
His father, Denzel Hayes Washington Sr., was a native of Buckingham County, Virginia who worked as a Pentecostal minister at the Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis; he also worked for the New York City Water Department.
Washington attended Pennington-Grimes Elementary School in Mount Vernon until 1968. When he was 14 his parents got divorced and he was sent to Oakland Military Academy in New Windsor, New York.
After finishing at Oakland he went to Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida for two years.
Denzel Washington’s father wanted him to become a preacher, but Denzel had other plans. He was interested in acting and decided to pursue it as a career.
After high school, Denzel attended Fordham University in New York City, where he studied Drama and Journalism until graduating in 1977. He didn’t have much money, so he worked as a janitor to support himself. He also took part in several student productions.
Washington’s Private Life.
After three marriage proposals Pauletta Pearson accepted and the couple were married on June 25, 1983, They first met on the set of his first screen work, the television film Wilma. The couple renewed their vowes in South Africa in 1995. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. Desmond Tutu.
They have four children: John David (born July 28, 1984), Katia (born November 27, 1986) and twins Olivia and Malcolm (born April 10, 1991).
Washington is a devout Christian, and thought about becoming a preacher. He stated in 1999,
“A part of me still says, ‘Maybe, Denzel, you’re supposed to preach. Maybe you’re still compromising.’ I’ve had an opportunity to play great men and, through their words, to preach. I take what talent I’ve been given seriously, and I want to use it for good.”
In 1995 he gave US$2.5 million to aid with the construction of the brand-new West Angeles Church of God in Christ edifice in Los Angeles. He reads his Bible every day.
Washington’s Acting Career?
After graduation, Washington moved to San Francisco to pursue an acting career. He got his start in theater, appearing in productions of “Othello” and “Death of a Salesman.”
His big break came in 1977 when he was cast as Dr. Phillip Chandler on the NBC medical drama “St. Elsewhere.” Washington spent six years on the show, during which time he earned two Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
