Record-high funding for Mainstream and Special Needs Education
Unprecedented Support for Disadvantaged Pupils and SEND
The UK’s education landscape is witnessing a transformative era, with schools across England set to benefit from an unprecedented cash influx. In 2024/25, education funding is poised to reach its highest ever level in real terms per pupil, totaling nearly £60 billion. This marks a significant milestone, especially considering the additional funding aimed at disadvantaged pupils and children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
To bolster inclusive education, the government is funneling an additional £440 million to support pupils with complex SEND. Local authorities will distribute this funding, enhancing the capabilities of special schools and mainstream institutions to cater to these students’ unique needs. The funding for those with complex needs is also witnessing a significant boost, escalating to £10.5 billion in 2024-25, a 60% increase over five years.
Moreover, the pupil premium funding rates are set to increase to £1,480 for primary pupils and £1,050 for secondary pupils in 2024-25. This 10% hike since 2021-22 brings the total funding to over £2.9 billion, targeting schools in disadvantaged areas to uplift educational outcomes.
Elevating Educational Standards
A Leap in Global Rankings and Quality
The funding surge aligns with the remarkable progress in educational standards in the UK. With 89% of schools now rated good or outstanding, up from 68% in 2010, the trajectory is clearly upwards. England’s global rankings in core subjects like maths, reading, and science are also climbing, reflecting the positive impact of the government’s reforms in education.
A Vision for the Future
Government’s Commitment to World-Class Education
Gillian Keegan, the Education Secretary, underscores the government’s commitment to elevating educational standards. The focus is not just on raising funding but also on ensuring that schools have the necessary tools to provide a world-class education. The government recognizes the ongoing high costs for schools and remains dedicated to supporting them with these investments.
Strategic Allocation of Funds
The Dedicated Schools Grant, which follows the National Funding Formula (NFF), actively allocates a significant portion of this funding. This formula ensures fair distribution of funds, providing additional support to disadvantaged pupils. The recent announcement also includes additional funding for teachers’ pay, totaling £900 million in 2024-25, further bolstering the education sector.
