The Royal Air Force (RAF) has joined forces with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and other European counterparts in India’s inaugural multilateral air exercise, Tarang Shakti. This collaboration highlights the UK’s commitment to strengthening military ties and enhancing security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Enhancing Military Cooperation

The RAF’s participation in Exercise Tarang Shakti marks a significant milestone in UK-India defence relations.

With a contingent comprising 130 personnel, six Eurofighter Typhoons, two A330 Voyager air-to-air refuellers, and an A-400M military transport aircraft, the RAF’s presence at Sulur Air Force Station in Tamil Nadu underscores the importance of international cooperation in maintaining regional stability.

Lindy Cameron, the British High Commissioner to India, emphasized the importance of this exercise, stating,

“I congratulate the Indian Air Force on organizing its first multilateral air exercise, Tarang Shakti, and am delighted that the Royal Air Force is one of the key participants. Our cooperation in security and defence extends across the seas, land, and air.”

Strategic Importance of Tarang Shakti

Exercise Tarang Shakti serves as a platform for participating nations to enhance their interoperability, share best practices, and refine their operational capabilities.

The involvement of advanced aircraft such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and India’s indigenous LCA Tejas showcases the military prowess and technological advancements of the involved nations.

Group Captain Neil Jones, Air Adviser at the British High Commission, highlighted the exercise’s significance:

“Exercise Tarang Shakti adds to a significant milestone in the ongoing relationship between the air forces of our two countries. Training in a multilateral environment provides a unique exposure to new challenges as well as integration of our tactics and skills across all specialisations.”

RAF’s Growing Presence in the Indo-Pacific

The RAF’s participation in Tarang Shakti follows a series of joint military exercises with India, demonstrating the UK’s growing strategic interest in the Indo-Pacific region.

For instance, the six Typhoons from XI (Fighter) Squadron arrived in India after participating in Exercise Pitch Black in Australia, where they operated alongside the IAF. Additionally, in March 2023, the IAF debuted at the RAF’s multilateral Exercise Cobra Warrior in the UK.

This ongoing engagement reflects the UK’s commitment to maintaining a strong and effective presence in the region, ensuring that its military forces remain prepared to respond to emerging challenges.

Looking Ahead

As Exercise Tarang Shakti continues, it is expected to pave the way for future military collaborations between the participating nations.

This exercise not only strengthens diplomatic and military ties but also reinforces the collective resolve to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

By participating in this historic exercise, the Royal Air Force is not only showcasing its operational capabilities but also reaffirming its commitment to international partnerships, which are crucial in today’s complex security environment.
