From 24 September, it will be illegal to own zombie-style knives and machetes in the UK. The government has issued a nationwide call for citizens to surrender these dangerous weapons before the ban takes effect, as part of a broader strategy to halve knife crime within a decade.

What are Zombie-style Knives?

The Government’s Call to Action

The UK government is taking decisive action against dangerous weapons by adding zombie-style knives and machetes to the list of prohibited items.

This move follows a pattern of previous bans on other lethal weapons like butterfly knives, Samurai swords, and push daggers. The goal is clear: to remove these threats from our streets and homes.

Between 26 August and 23 September, police stations across England and Wales will run a weapons surrender scheme. During this period, individuals can hand over these weapons without facing legal repercussions.

The scheme is designed to encourage safe disposal, with options for anonymous drop-offs at designated surrender bins. This effort is not just about compliance but about contributing to the safety of communities nationwide.

Policing Minister’s Statement

Policing Minister Diana Johnson emphasized the critical importance of this initiative:

“Too many people have access to weapons that can lead to devastating, life-changing consequences. There is no legitimate need for a weapon of this kind to be in our homes or on our streets.”

“We are offering people the chance to do the right thing—to help make our streets safer, prevent further loss of life, and save so many futures.”

Johnson’s statement underscores the broader mission to reduce knife crime across the UK. The ban on zombie-style knives is a significant step, but it is just the beginning.

The government is committed to implementing stricter measures, including banning ninja swords, tightening regulations on online sales, and tackling the root causes of youth crime.

A Nationwide Effort for Safer Streets

This weapons surrender scheme is part of a larger government pledge to halve knife crime within the next decade. The initiative calls for a collaborative effort from political, policing, and community leaders. With the support of local councils, anti-knife crime charities, and the public, the UK aims to create a safer environment for future generations.

Participating police stations are strategically located throughout the country. Citizens are encouraged to contact their local station for advice on safely packaging and surrendering these weapons.

The importance of community involvement cannot be overstated; it is a shared responsibility to ensure that these dangerous items are no longer a threat.

What’s Next?

The ban on zombie-style knives and machetes is just one aspect of the government’s broader strategy. Upcoming steps include more bans on dangerous weapons, stronger rules to prevent online sales of these items, and initiatives to deter young people from being drawn into crime.

The government’s determination to tackle knife crime is unwavering, and this crackdown on zombie-style knives is a significant milestone in that journey.

In Summary

  • Nationwide ban on zombie-style knives and machetes effective 24 September.
  • Weapons surrender scheme available at police stations across England and Wales from 26 August to 23 September.
  • Public urged to surrender weapons safely, contributing to the goal of halving knife crime within a decade.
