As Responsible Dog Ownership Month kicks off, Tucson Parks and Recreation is rolling out a timely initiative aimed at ensuring the city’s public spaces remain clean, safe, and enjoyable for all.

The “Leash Up. Clean Up.” campaign, launched this September, calls on Tucson’s dog owners to embrace the shared responsibility of keeping their pets leashed in public areas and always cleaning up after them.

Understanding the “Leash Up. Clean Up.” Campaign

The “Leash Up. Clean Up.” campaign is more than just a reminder; it’s a community-wide effort to foster responsible pet ownership. This initiative underscores the importance of adhering to local and state regulations, particularly the laws that require dogs to be leashed in public spaces.

Tucson’s desert landscape, home to various wildlife such as javelinas, coyotes, and snakes, poses significant risks to off-leash dogs. The campaign highlights these dangers, emphasizing that leashing dogs not only protects pets but also respects the safety and comfort of other park visitors.

Moreover, the campaign addresses the often-overlooked issue of dog waste. Pet owners are encouraged to recognize the environmental and health impacts of not picking up after their dogs.

Contrary to some beliefs, dog waste is not a natural fertilizer; rather, it is highly acidic and can damage grass, contaminate gardens, and introduce harmful bacteria into local water sources.

Diseases such as salmonella, E. coli, and roundworms can spread through uncollected dog waste, posing risks to other animals and humans alike.

Why Compliance Matters

Adhering to Tucson’s dog leash laws is not just about following the rules; it’s about contributing to the well-being of the entire community. The campaign aims to educate residents on the Arizona Revised Statutes and Tucson City codes that mandate leashing dogs and removing pet waste from public spaces.

Compliance with these laws helps to maintain the beauty and safety of Tucson’s parks and recreation areas, ensuring that they remain welcoming to everyone.

How You Can Support the Campaign

Tucson Parks and Recreation is calling on all residents to take part in the “Leash Up. Clean Up.” campaign. By keeping dogs on leashes and cleaning up after them, the community can protect the environment, safeguard public health, and create a more enjoyable experience for everyone using the city’s public spaces.

To help spread the word, the department has developed a toolkit for community members. This toolkit includes key messages, social media graphics, and artwork for banners and advertisements, making it easy for residents to participate in promoting the campaign.

Summary of the Arizona Revised Statutes and Tucson City codes related to dog ownership:

Requirement

Details

Leashing Dogs in Public Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet when in public areas.
Cleaning Up Waste Owners must remove dog waste from public and private property immediately.
Off-Leash Areas Designated dog parks are the only areas where dogs are allowed off-leash.

This campaign is a reminder that simple actions like leashing pets and picking up after them can significantly impact the community’s well-being. Let’s work together to make Tucson a cleaner, safer place for all.

Final Thoughts

The “Leash Up. Clean Up.” campaign is a vital step towards promoting responsible pet ownership in Tucson. By following the guidelines and participating in this initiative, residents can help ensure that the city’s parks and public spaces are preserved for future generations.

This September, let’s all commit to making Tucson a better place—one leash and one cleanup at a time.
