Have you ever wondered how a language can unite a nation?

Te reo Māori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand, is doing just that. With the arrival of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), the entire country comes together to celebrate a cultural treasure that has stood the test of time and continues to thrive.

The 2024 theme, “Ake Ake Ake – A Forever Language,” emphasizes the timeless importance of te reo in the hearts of New Zealanders.

The Significance of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, first celebrated over 30 years ago, has grown from a single day into a week-long event that captures the spirit of national pride.

Each year, it becomes a reminder that te reo Māori is not just a historical artifact but a living, breathing language spoken in homes, schools, and businesses across the country.

Māori Language Week 2024 honors Kīngi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, with a special dedication to his memory.

It also welcomes his daughter, Te Arikinui Kuini Nga Wai Hono i te Pō, the new leader of the Kīngitanga movement, whose contributions continue to inspire many.

Reo Māori in Everyday Life

As te reo Māori becomes increasingly prominent in both public and private sectors, more businesses across New Zealand are embracing the language.

From tourism to engineering, the use of Māori is spreading, introducing the language to new audiences. This national embrace of te reo is a testament to its vitality and relevance in modern New Zealand life.

Even in international spaces, such as the Olympics, New Zealanders proudly incorporate Māori into their global presence. This growing recognition not only reinforces a sense of national identity but also demonstrates how cultural heritage can play a crucial role in shaping the future.

How You Can Participate in Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Whether you are fluent in te reo or just beginning to learn, this is the perfect time to join in. Numerous events are taking place across the country, from language classes to cultural performances, giving everyone a chance to connect with the language in their own way.

Government leaders, like the Minister for Māori Development Tama Potaka, are encouraging all New Zealanders to give the language a go.

As Potaka states,

“Te reo Māori connects us all to this place.”

Regardless of one’s background, embracing the lasqnguage fosters a deeper connection to Aotearoa New Zealand.

A Future for Reo Māori

Te reo Māori is much more than a language; it’s the heartbeat of Aotearoa. By supporting and celebrating it during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, you are helping to ensure its future as a “Forever Language.”

Whether you’re attending events, practicing phrases, or incorporating Māori into your everyday life, every effort helps to strengthen this vital part of New Zealand’s heritage.
