On the second anniversary of Mahsa Zhina Amini’s death, the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand issued a joint statement standing in solidarity with the people of Iran. Amini’s tragic death in police custody ignited a global movement demanding justice and freedom for women in Iran.

A Global Call for Justice

Mahsa Amini’s death on 16th September 2022, following her arrest by Iran’s morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly, sparked widespread protests across the country. As the protests grew, the global community rallied in support, with the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement gaining international momentum.

The joint statement from the UK and its allies reflects continued backing for Iranian women and the human rights defenders who face brutal repression daily.

According to the statement, the Iranian government’s crackdown on protestors resulted in the deaths of over 500 people and the detainment of more than 20,000 in 2022 and 2023. Yet, the global “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement remains steadfast in its commitment to fundamental freedoms.

Timeline of Events

Date

Event

13th September 2022 Amini is detained by Iran’s morality police in Tehran.
16th September 2022 Mahsa Amini dies after falling into a coma.
17th September 2022 Protests erupt at Amini’s funeral in Saqez.
22nd September 2022 The US imposes sanctions on Iran’s morality police.

The Ongoing Fight for Rights

Despite international pressure, the Iranian government has yet to address allegations of severe human rights violations.

The UN’s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) on Iran has confirmed that many of these violations, including torture and unlawful killings, amount to crimes against humanity.

Still, the Iranian regime continues to enforce strict measures, notably the renewed “Noor” hijab crackdown, leading to heightened surveillance and repression.

Women and girls face daily harassment, with reports of torture in detention. The Iranian authorities, as noted in the statement, have bolstered their surveillance systems to curb peaceful protests. In response, governments like the UK’s have pledged to continue holding Iran accountable.

The joint statement emphasises that the signatories will use “all relevant national legal authorities,” including sanctions and visa restrictions, to promote justice.

International Solidarity and Commitment

Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed the UK’s unwavering support for Iranian women:

“Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with those fighting for their basic rights. The bravery of Iranian women, in the face of repression, is nothing short of inspiring.”

The joint statement also calls for the Iranian government to fulfil its promises to ease pressure on civil society and stop the use of force against women exercising their right to peaceful protest.

The recent surge in executions, often without fair trial, has drawn significant international criticism, further fuelling calls for Iran to cease these violations immediately.

Important Takeaways from the Joint Statement

  • Solidarity: The UK, US, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand reaffirm support for Iranian women and human rights defenders.
  • Condemnation: The statement condemns the Iranian government’s ongoing human rights violations, particularly against women and girls.
  • Action: Nations pledge continued sanctions and visa restrictions on Iranian officials involved in the repression.

A Movement That Continues to Resonate

Amini’s death has become a symbol of resistance not just within Iran but globally. The “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement has drawn support from every corner of the world, with weekly rallies held in major cities.

This movement highlights the enduring desire for justice, dignity, and rights that transcends borders.

As the world marks the second anniversary of Amini’s death, the international community remains united in its calls for change. The joint statement is a powerful reminder that, although two years have passed, the fight for human rights in Iran is far from over.

The Iranian government’s crackdown has failed to silence the voices calling for freedom. Instead, the global spotlight on Mahsa Amini’s story continues to shine brighter, serving as a rallying cry for those committed to defending human rights.
