Visa holders across the UK are urged to transition from physical documents to eVisas as the government rolls out a digital overhaul of the immigration system.

With £4 million in grant funding to support vulnerable individuals, this change is set to enhance security and streamline visa management.

Why the Shift to eVisas?

The transition from physical immigration documents to eVisas is part of the UK’s broader effort to modernise its border and immigration system. The government is promoting eVisas due to their advantages over traditional documents.

Unlike physical permits or visas, eVisas are secure, cannot be lost or tampered with, and offer immediate proof of immigration status.

Minister for Migration & Citizenship Seema Malhotra highlighted the benefits:

“Switching to an eVisa is straightforward and offers significant cost savings and enhanced security. It ensures that visa holders can prove their immigration rights securely and instantly.”

Who Needs to Act?

Current holders of biometric residence permits (BRP), passport visa vignettes, or biometric residence cards (BRC) are affected by this change.

If you use any of these physical documents to prove your immigration status, you need to transition to an eVisa.

How to Transition

The process to obtain an eVisa is simple and free of charge. Visa holders should visit gov.uk/eVisa to start the transition. For those needing assistance, the government has allocated up to £4 million in grant funding to support the transition, focusing on vulnerable groups.

This funding will be distributed through various UK-based voluntary and community sector organisations.

Support Available

Four national grant-funded organisations have been confirmed to assist with the transition:

  • Migrant Help
  • Citizens Advice Scotland
  • Welsh Refugee Council
  • Advice NI

These organisations are providing immediate, free support to individuals navigating the shift to eVisas. Additional community-based organisations will join this network in the coming weeks, further expanding the support available.

Commemorating the Transition

A targeted advertising campaign will commence in autumn 2024 to raise awareness about the transition. This campaign will build on existing communications efforts to ensure that all affected visa holders are informed about the changes and how to transition smoothly.

Benefits of eVisas

  • Enhanced Security: Digital format prevents loss or tampering.
  • Greater Convenience: Instant proof of status.
  • Cost Savings: Reduces the need for physical document management.

Summary

The transition to eVisas represents a significant step in the digitisation of the UK’s border and immigration system. With £4 million in grant funding to support vulnerable individuals, the government aims to ensure a smooth shift from physical to digital documentation.

Visa holders are encouraged to act now to benefit from this streamlined and secure system.
