The forestry sector is not just about planting trees; it’s about nurturing sustainable futures. Forestry England and the Forestry Commission are investing in lifelong learning to help their staff develop essential skills for the future.

This commitment ensures that both forests and careers continue to thrive.

Supporting Career Development in Forestry

The Forestry Commission and Forestry England are at the forefront of providing employees with valuable career development opportunities.

These organisations focus on continuous learning, offering structured training programs designed to equip their teams with the necessary skills to manage the UK’s woodland and ensure long-term sustainability.

In a rapidly changing world, forestry professionals need more than just hands-on experience. This is where ongoing training becomes essential.

Employees are given access to unique learning opportunities that allow them to adapt to new technologies and sustainable practices, ensuring they remain at the cutting edge of the industry.

Case Studies of Professional Growth

Several individuals have benefited from the career development programs within the Forestry Commission and Forestry England, illustrating the value of these initiatives.

Abi Davis, Recreation Ranger

Abi Davis, who started as a surveyor in 2015, transitioned to a role in recreation and discovered a passion for mountain biking.

Through the “Cycling at Work” training by British Cycling, she learned essential bike maintenance skills and honed her trail-riding abilities.

Speaking about the training, Abi said:

“It was a highlight when one of the coaches helped me ride down a rock garden—something I didn’t think I was capable of!”

Her story highlights how the right support can empower individuals to embrace new challenges. Abi now inspects cycle trails, combining her love of the outdoors with ensuring the best experience for forest visitors.

Her work is part of a broader effort to make forests accessible to all, including those with mobility challenges.

Tristan Haynes, Woodland Creation Officer

Tristan Haynes has been instrumental in guiding landowners through woodland creation processes. To maintain his expertise, Tristan attended a two-day course on soil resilience.

This training gave him the knowledge to help landowners select the best tree species for their planting schemes, considering long-term forest health.

As Tristan notes:

“Woodlands contribute in so many ways to improving social well-being, the environment, and the economy.”

This course has made him better equipped to guide landowners in creating thriving forests that benefit the wider community.

The Role of Training in Long-term Forestry Success

Training doesn’t just benefit employees; it enhances the entire forestry sector. Programs like the Forestry Commission’s “Forestry in a Nutshell” course provide non-operational staff, such as Katarzyna Bromek, with an in-depth understanding of forestry operations.

Katarzyna, part of the Incentives Development Team, participated in the two-day crash course, gaining valuable insights into forest management, policies, and long-term environmental planning.

“I love knowing that my work will contribute to addressing the climate emergency,” Katarzyna shared,

reflecting the broader mission of the Forestry Commission to secure the future of England’s woodlands.

A Commitment to Lifelong Learning

Across Forestry England and the Forestry Commission, there is a shared understanding that career development is crucial to the success of both employees and the organisation.

Whether it’s through apprenticeships, formal degrees, or specific technical courses, staff are empowered to expand their expertise.

Here’s a look at some of the training opportunities available to forestry staff:

Training Program

Focal Areas

Duration

Cycling at Work Mountain biking and trail inspection 2 days
Soil Resilience in Forestry Soil analysis and woodland health 2 days
Forestry in a Nutshell Crash course for non-operational staff 2 days
Chartered Managers Degree Leadership and business management 3 years

By investing in staff, Forestry England and the Forestry Commission ensure the long-term sustainability of both careers and the environment.

A Growing Sector with Opportunities for All

The UK’s forestry sector offers a wealth of opportunities for those passionate about sustainability, outdoor activities, and environmental protection.

The Forestry Commission and Forestry England nurture the next generation of forests and forestry professionals through training programs.
