  • Hurricane Helene Response Efforts: By the Numbers

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, the Department of Defense (DOD) has swiftly mobilized nearly 1,500 active-duty soldiers and over 6,100 National Guard troops.

These forces, in close coordination with FEMA and state officials, are providing critical relief to the hardest-hit areas. Their efforts aim to restore order, deliver aid, and assist in rebuilding the affected communities.

DOD’s Immediate Response to Hurricane Helene

Following a request from FEMA and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, the DOD has taken immediate action to support local, state, and federal emergency responders. This strategic response highlights the importance of rapid deployment and the critical role of military assets in disaster recovery efforts.

Troops Deployed from Fort Liberty and Fort Campbell

Nearly 1,000 soldiers from Fort Liberty, North Carolina, and Fort Campbell, Kentucky, are now on the ground. They are working closely with FEMA to distribute essential supplies and clear emergency routes in areas hardest hit by the storm.

Additionally, helicopters have been deployed to conduct aerial assessments and transport supplies to inaccessible areas, ensuring that help reaches those most in need.

National Guard’s Role in Recovery Efforts

The National Guard’s presence is equally critical. More than 6,100 Guardsmen from 18 states have been deployed, bringing with them:

  • Hundreds of high-water vehicles for rescue and transport.
  • Dozens of helicopters and rescue boats to support life-saving operations.

These Guardsmen, operating under State Active Duty status, are working around the clock to restore stability and provide essential services to victims of the storm.

Infrastructure Support from the US Army Corps of Engineers

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is also playing a pivotal role. They have established 12 Emergency Operations Centers across the Southeast, with three located in North Carolina.

Their teams are conducting assessments and repair efforts focused on:

  • Power restoration and emergency power assessments.
  • Water and wastewater management.
  • Bridge and road inspections.

These efforts are crucial in ensuring that the region’s infrastructure remains operational and that affected communities can begin the process of recovery.

DOD Commitment to Ongoing Relief

The Department of Defense’s commitment to supporting FEMA’s whole-of-government relief efforts is unwavering. The DOD focuses on delivering essential capabilities to meet the needs of those on the ground as it deploys additional troops and expands relief operations.

The military ensures efficient resource delivery and coordinates with federal and local agencies to guarantee a unified disaster recovery approach.

The combined effort of the DOD, National Guard, and US Army Corps of Engineers showcases the country’s resilience and determination to help communities recover from this historic natural disaster.

By standing alongside local, state, and federal partners, the DOD plays an indispensable role in the ongoing efforts to protect lives and restore normalcy across the impacted areas.

As the situation unfolds, these agencies remain vigilant, continuing to adapt and deploy additional resources to meet the evolving needs of Hurricane Helene’s victims.
