Tucson’s community spirit will shine on December 7, 2024, as Disability Pride Day returns to the Carol West Senior Center at Udall Park.

The event, honoring the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, will feature a keynote address by former State Representative Jennifer Longdon, a dedicated advocate for disability rights.

A Celebration of Inclusion and Advocacy

Tucson residents are invited to join the third annual Disability Pride Day, celebrating diversity and promoting disability awareness, advocacy, and empowerment. Hosted by Council Member Paul Cunningham’s Ward 2 office and Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports (SAAS), this year’s event takes a significant step forward.

Specifically, it unites the community, showcases exceptional talents, and highlights valuable contributions of individuals with disabilities. As a result, Disability Pride Day cultivates a culture of acceptance, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

Jennifer Longdon was shot and paralyzed in a random drive-by incident in 2004. Since then, she has become a vocal advocate, working to remove barriers that impact people with disabilities.

“I am honored to have been asked to deliver the keynote address,” Longdon shared. “Events like this help push back against negative stereotypes and highlight the beauty and power of disability activism.”

What to Expect at Disability Pride Day

The event promises a lively and enriching experience with a full schedule of activities designed to engage and inspire the community. From sports demonstrations to art exhibitions, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Event Highlights

  1. Keynote Address
Jennifer Longdon’s address will take place from 12:00-1:00 PM on the main stage. She will speak about the progress made and challenges faced by those living with disabilities in Arizona, emphasizing the need for continued support and advocacy.
  2. Adaptive Sports Demos
Hosted by Southern Arizona Adaptive Sports (SAAS), the gym area will feature demonstrations and opportunities to meet local para-athletes. Attendees can witness adaptive athletic equipment in action and even take photos with Paralympians.
  3. Art Show Featuring Disabled Artists
An art exhibition will showcase work from talented disabled artists in Tucson, running from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This exhibition, sponsored by Desert Survivors Inc., will also include live art creation sessions where attendees can watch artists at work.
  4. Live Entertainment
The event will spotlight performers with disabilities, providing a platform for musicians, dancers, and other entertainers to showcase their talents. Furthermore, to culminate the festivities, a lively dance party from 4:00-5:00 PM will bring everyone together, encouraging all attendees to join in the celebration.
