In a significant step to bolster flood defenses in Kent, a new gate has been installed at the Leigh Flood Storage Area (FSA), a move that will enhance protection for over 1,400 homes and businesses in the region.

Located between the villages of Leigh and Penshurst, this upgrade is part of a broader effort to mitigate the risk of flooding from the River Medway.

Enhanced Flood Protection

The Leigh FSA, which already reduces the risk of flooding to 1,200 homes and businesses in Tonbridge, has been upgraded to hold 25% more water than its current capacity. This increase is substantial, equivalent to the volume of 600 Olympic swimming pools.

The new gate is a critical component of this expansion, ensuring that the area can effectively manage and store excess water during heavy rainfall events.

Project Details

The upgrade is part of a larger £21.5 million scheme, comprising multiple components, including the expansion of the Leigh Flood Storage Area (FSA) and the construction of new flood defenses at Hildenborough. Specifically, this comprehensive project will bolster flood protection in the region.

Notably, the Tonbridge aspect of the project, scheduled to commence in spring 2023, aims to safeguard an additional 230 properties from flooding.

Concurrently, this phase will lay the groundwork for subsequent development. Meanwhile, the construction at Hildenborough is slated to begin in 2024, further enhancing the area’s resilience to flooding.

Benefits of the Project:

  • Increased Capacity: The Leigh FSA can now hold 25% more water.
  • Protected Homes: Over 1,400 homes and businesses are better protected.
  • Equivalent Volume: The increased capacity is equal to 600 Olympic swimming pools.
  • Broader Project: Part of a £21.5 million scheme including Hildenborough embankment.
  • Future Construction: Work at Hildenborough to start in 2024.

Impact on Local Communities

The installation of the new gate and the expansion of the Leigh FSA are crucial for the local communities in Tonbridge and surrounding areas.

These upgrades will provide reassurance to residents and business owners who have previously been at risk of flooding.

The enhanced flood protection measures align with the UK’s broader strategy to improve flood defenses and protect vulnerable areas.

Future Developments

As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance flood defenses in West Kent, the Hildenborough embankment scheme will also be implemented. This will further strengthen the region’s resilience against flooding, ensuring that more properties are safeguarded against potential flood risks.

In Conclusion

The new gate at the Leigh Flood Storage Area marks a significant milestone in Kent’s flood protection efforts. Notably, with the capacity to hold more water and protect additional homes, this upgrade is a testament to the UK’s commitment to enhancing flood defenses.

Furthermore, this development sets the stage for continued improvement. As a result, as the region continues to develop and expand its flood protection measures, residents can confidently look forward to increased safety and security.

Moreover, this enhanced infrastructure will have a lasting impact on the community, providing peace of mind for generations to come.
