Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is a bustling metropolis located in the heart of South Asia. With an estimated population of more than 23 million people, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Exploring Dhaka brings home a multitude of different religions and cultures.

The City of Dhaka

Dhaka has thrived as a trading center since ancient times, showcasing its rich history through colonial-era architecture and sleek modern skyscrapers. Bangladesh’s economy relies heavily on Dhaka, which manufactures textiles and various other exported goods.

Dhaka’s cultural attractions include some magnificent mosques, temples, and monuments from various eras. Visitors flock to enjoy sightseeing tours or take part in cricket matches at popular local stadiums like Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

History: 400 Years of Growth

Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka has experienced immense growth over the past 400 years. Of particular note is the incredible development that has taken place in Dhaka since it was established as the Mughal Empire’s provincial capital in 1608.

Initially, Dhaka was a small market town with a population of around 30,000 people. Today it is one of the most populous cities in South Asia with an estimated population of more than 18 million people according to recent estimates from 2018.

This impressive growth rate can be attributed to various factors including its strategic location between India and China which has been instrumental for trade and commerce throughout its history.

In addition, due to its closeness to Bengal Bay, Dhaka has also become an important port city for regional trade and shipping routes connecting Europe and Asia since the colonial era.

Digital Dhaka

The city has emerged as Bangladesh’s primary tech hub, with several notable developments:

  • Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park at Kaliakair, housing numerous IT companies and startups
  • Flourishing fintech scene with mobile financial services like bKash and Nagad
  • Growing e-commerce sector with platforms like Daraz and Chaldal
  • Digital innovation hubs and co-working spaces in Banani and Gulshan areas

Contemporary Culture & Entertainment

While preserving its historical heritage, Dhaka’s cultural scene has expanded to include:

Modern Entertainment Venues

  • Jamuna Future Park: One of South Asia’s largest shopping malls
  • Bangladesh Film Archive New Complex: Showcasing the country’s cinematic heritage
  • Star Cineplex: Multiple locations offering international and local films
  • Base Entertainment: Modern gaming and entertainment centers

Art & Cultural Spaces

  • Bengal Shilpalay: Contemporary art gallery and cultural center
  • Edge Gallery: Platform for emerging artists
  • Dhaka Art Summit: Biennial event attracting international attention

Architecture: Showcasing the Past and the Future

Architecture is an integral part of the history and culture of any place, and Dhaka is no exception. This bustling Bangladeshi city boasts a blend of traditional Islamic architecture with contemporary trends to create stunning designs that reflect its past and point to the future.

Dhaka’s old town provides a great example of this combination, with buildings ranging from ornate Hindu temples built during Mughal rule to colonial-era churches. These structures are beautifully preserved examples of how architecture can be an important tool in learning about a place’s past.

At the same time, Dhaka also showcases innovative new buildings like contemporary shopping malls and skyscrapers that demonstrate its progress into modernity.

Through the marriage between old and new styles, Dhaka offers visitors a unique glimpse into its history as well as its prospects for growth.

Modern Infrastructure & Transportation

The city’s transportation landscape has been revolutionized by the introduction of the Dhaka Metro Rail (MRT Line-6), which began operations in 2022. This elevated rapid transit system connects Uttara to Motijheel, providing a much-needed alternative to road transport.

The government has also initiated work on additional metro lines, with MRT Line-1 and Line-5 under construction.

For daily commuting, ride-sharing services like Uber, Pathao, and Shohoz have become popular alternatives to traditional transportation. These digital platforms have made getting around the city more convenient, especially for young professionals and tourists.

Busses and Taxis

Public transportation such as buses and taxis are common modes of transport in Dhaka. Buses run frequently throughout the city, however, they may be overcrowded during rush hour times.

Taxis are also available to get around town quickly though prices may vary depending on your distance traveled.

Moreover, some private operators offer fixed-route services with better quality vehicles and reliable service at lower fares than taxis.

For long-distance journeys, air-conditioned buses are available that offer comfortable seating and a smooth ride.

Another common mode of transport in Dhaka is rickshaws – also known as three-wheeled scooters – which provide an easy way to navigate through busy traffic conditions.

Industries: Economic Hub

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is an important economic hub for the country and its many industries. As a densely populated city with a high concentration of businesses and factories, Dhaka is home to a wide range of industries that provide essential goods and services needed by local communities. From textiles to electronics, these industries are vital to the economic health of Bangladesh and its people.

These industries are also integral to Dhaka’s development as an economic center in South Asia. By creating jobs in manufacturing and other sectors, they generate income which contributes to GDP growth and helps reduce poverty levels in the region.

Moreover, they help build infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and ports which make it easier for companies from all over the world to export their products from Bangladesh.

In short, these industries play an important role in powering Dhaka’s economy both domestically and internationally.

Discover Dhaka Ancient Wonders

Dhaka boasts a rich history and culture, featuring landmarks like the Lalbagh Fort. Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb built the fort in 1678, and his son Muhammad Azam Shah later expanded it.

The fort houses several mosques and mausoleums that have withstood multiple attacks over the centuries and remain standing today.

Old Dhaka also boasts many other fascinating structures including Ahsan Manzil, an imposing palace once owned by the Nawab family that attracts visitors from far and wide.

The Parks in and Around the City

Dhaka’s urban landscape showcases vibrant parks and green spaces, inviting residents and visitors to reconnect with nature.

One of the most popular parks in the city is Suhrawardy Udyan, located near the National Parliament Building. Developers transformed this former 19th-century aristocratic residential area into a vibrant green oasis, featuring jogging paths, walking trails, serene ponds and elegant fountains.

Another great park within Dhaka City is Ramna Park. It offers visitors a chance to take part in various activities such as cycling, boating on its lake, or simply enjoying some peace and quiet beneath its trees.

The park also has two museums: Bangladesh National Museum and Ahsan Manzil Palace Museum which are both worth visiting for their historical significance to the country’s culture.
