Negotiations on an upgraded UK-South Korea trade deal resumed this week, with officials from both countries meeting in Seoul.

The aim of these discussions is to modernise the current agreement, strengthening ties in sectors like digital trade, green energy, and technology, all of which have become pivotal to both economies.

Renewed Focus on Digital and Green Energy

As UK and South Korean negotiators reconvene, there’s a clear focus on addressing the growing digital economy and green energy initiatives. The existing trade deal, which was agreed over a decade ago, lacks modern provisions for these booming sectors.

The UK’s digital industry alone was valued at £158.3 billion in 2022, with major potential for expansion into South Korea’s increasingly high-tech market.

Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds highlighted the importance of this new chapter, stating,

“Both the UK and South Korea are renowned as global leaders in technology. Our high-tech economies have so much more we can do together once our trade deal is upgraded.”

Potential Gains for UK Businesses

The upgraded trade deal is expected to unlock significant opportunities for British companies. Already, nearly 7,000 UK businesses export goods to South Korea, with 85% of these being small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

An updated agreement could simplify customs procedures, reduce tariffs, and make it easier for British companies to navigate the South Korean market.

Key industries such as green energy, automotive, and manufacturing stand to benefit most from the modernisation of the trade deal.

South Korean companies have already committed £21 billion to UK green energy and infrastructure projects, and further collaboration in these areas could drive both economies forward.

Why This Trade Deal Matters

Both countries recognise the need to adapt to rapidly changing global markets. South Korea, with its growing middle class and demand for high-quality imports, represents a prime opportunity for UK businesses. The UK, on the other hand, is seeking to expand its post-Brexit trade portfolio and strengthen partnerships with global tech and manufacturing leaders.

The UK-South Korea trade volume reached £17 billion by June 2024, offering vast potential for additional economic growth. The UK’s automotive sector is a major export to South Korea, poised for further growth under an enhanced trade agreement, driven by demand for high-performance, low-carbon and driverless vehicles.

Industry Voices on the Future of UK-Korea Trade

Industry leaders are keenly watching the outcome of these talks.

Sabina Ciofu, Associate Director for International Policy and Trade at techUK, noted,

“We see significant opportunity in expanding trade in digital services and technology, where British expertise and innovation are world-leading.”

Chris Sunghwal, CEO of SeAH Wind, echoed these sentiments, adding,

“This is the start of a long and fruitful relationship for SeAH in the UK, and we believe our journey can be replicated by other South Korean companies considering the UK as their next investment destination.”

Wrapping Up

The UK and South Korea’s revived trade talks will usher in a new era for their bilateral trade relationship. Both nations will modernize and expand economic ties, benefiting businesses in digital technology, green energy and manufacturing.

The UK and South Korea are strengthening their economic ties through a modernized trade agreement, boosting bilateral trade and investment.

The UK-South Korea partnership drives mutual benefits in digital trade, green energy and global trade innovation, boosting businesses and consumers.
