The newly brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanese Hizbollah marks a critical turning point in a year-long conflict that displaced over a million people.

Announced on November 26, 2024, it aims to halt violence and provide a foundation for lasting peace, with strong support from international diplomacy.

A Conflict with Humanitarian Consequences

Since October 2023, clashes between Israel and Hizbollah have devastated communities on both sides of the border. The conflict escalated shortly after Hamas’s attack on Israel, leading to retaliatory actions by Hizbollah.

Over 1.2 million civilians were displaced in Lebanon, with many living in precarious conditions under constant threat.

Timeline of Events

  • October 7, 2023: Hamas launches attacks on Israel; Hizbollah retaliates the next day.
  • 2024: Escalating hostilities result in thousands of casualties and severe infrastructure damage.
  • November 26, 2024: A ceasefire agreement is announced, with international mediation playing a pivotal role.

The Role of International Diplomacy

UK and G7 Involvement

The UK was the first G7 country to call for an immediate ceasefire, advocating for diplomatic solutions consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

  • Support for UNIFIL: The UK continues to back peacekeeping efforts along the Blue Line, essential for long-term stability.
  • Humanitarian Aid: £15 million was allocated by the UK to assist with medical supplies, emergency cash, and shelter in Lebanon.

US Mediation Efforts

U.S. officials, alongside partners from France and the UN, facilitated negotiations between Israeli and Lebanese representatives. Intense discussions in November 2024 culminated in a framework for peace.

Ceasefire Agreement Provisions

The ceasefire includes a plan for stabilization and conflict prevention.

Highlights of the Agreement:

  • Immediate cessation of hostilities to halt violence on both sides.
  • Gradual troop withdrawal: Israeli forces to leave southern Lebanon within 60 days, enabling Lebanese security forces to secure the area.
  • International oversight: Continued monitoring by UN peacekeepers and diplomatic allies.

Looking Ahead: Prospects for Peace

The ceasefire is an opportunity to address long-standing tensions and prioritize humanitarian relief. Experts highlight the importance of political settlements rooted in international resolutions to sustain peace.

Steps Toward Stability

  • Strengthen support for UN resolutions, including 1701.
  • Bolster Lebanese Armed Forces as the sole legitimate military entity.
  • Address humanitarian needs, ensuring aid reaches affected communities swiftly.

Final Thoughts

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanese Hizbollah signals hope for a more stable future in the Middle East. While challenges remain, diplomatic collaboration and humanitarian efforts offer a path forward.
