Canadian businesses are about to make significant strides in Southeast Asia as Minister Mary Ng, leading the largest-ever Team Canada Trade Mission, heads to Indonesia and the Philippines from December 1 to 6, 2024.

This mission will engage over 300 representatives from 190 companies, aiming to expand trade, boost investment, and strengthen Canada’s ties with these fast-growing markets as part of the Indo-Pacific Strategy.

Why Southeast Asia Matters

With its booming economies and strategic importance, Southeast Asia offers untapped potential for Canadian exporters.

Minister Ng’s mission is designed to capitalize on Indonesia and the Philippines’ dynamic growth, helping Canadian businesses:

  • Gain insights into regional business cultures,
  • Build connections with key industry and government leaders,
  • Tap into emerging opportunities in sectors like clean technology, manufacturing, and agriculture.

The mission’s focus extends beyond trade; it emphasizes sustainable and inclusive business practices, aligning with Canada’s values of diversity and innovation.

Mission Objectives and Highlights

Minister Ng’s itinerary is packed with impactful engagements aimed at strengthening Canada’s economic presence in Southeast Asia.

Canadian Objectives:

  1. Boost Trade and Investment: Unlock new market opportunities in Indonesia and the Philippines.
  2. Strengthen Regional Partnerships: Deepen Canada’s ties with ASEAN members, fostering long-term collaboration.
  3. Promote Sustainability: Advocate for green economy initiatives and women’s leadership in business.

During the mission, Canadian businesses will participate in networking events and discussions covering topics such as:

Benefits for Canadian Businesses

Participating companies can expect a range of benefits:

  • Market Insights: Access to in-depth knowledge of Indonesian and Philippine markets.
  • Networking Opportunities: Direct connections with influential industry and government leaders.
  • Increased Visibility: Enhanced presence in Southeast Asia, opening doors to long-term partnerships.

Moreover, past Team Canada missions have led to:

  • Business agreements and sales contracts,
  • Strategic alliances that bolstered international market presence,
  • Expanded representation in global markets, particularly in Asia.

A Step Toward Diversification and Growth

Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy underscores the importance of diversifying beyond traditional markets.

In 2023 alone, trade between Canada and Indonesia reached $5.1 billion, while trade with the Philippines stood at $3.4 billion. This mission aims to amplify these figures, offering Canadian businesses a gateway to broader success.

Minister Ng’s leadership reflects Canada’s commitment to fostering strong economic relationships in Southeast Asia, setting the stage for future prosperity. With Southeast Asia’s growing importance in the global economy, Canadian companies are poised to benefit from this timely initiative.

As Minister Ng puts it:

“Creating growth opportunities in this region is critical for diversifying Canada’s economic relationships and securing well-paying jobs for Canadians. This mission is a step toward that future.”

This mission is not just about business—it’s about shaping a more inclusive and resilient Canadian economy.
