When people think of Nigeria, they often picture the bustling city of Lagos or the government hub, Abuja. While these cities are exciting and full of energy, there’s so much more to Nigeria than just its two largest urban centers.

Beyond the fast pace of Lagos and Abuja, you’ll find a world of stunning landscapes, fascinating history, vibrant culture, and incredible wildlife waiting to be explored.

In this guide, we’ll show you so much more of Nigeria—places that promise adventure, peace, and a deeper connection with the country’s roots. Are you ready to go beyond the usual tourist stops? Let’s get started!

Nigeria: A Journey Through Beauty and Culture

Nigeria is a country rich in culture, filled with amazing landscapes, and layered with history. While Lagos and Abuja attract many visitors, traveling to lesser-known spots can give you a glimpse of the real heart of the nation.

1. Calabar, Cross River State: A Mix of Nature and Tradition

Located in the southern part of Nigeria, Calabar is a peaceful and charming destination. Surrounded by lush greenery and known for its warm hospitality, it’s often called Nigeria’s ecotourism capital. Whether you love nature, history, or food, Calabar has something for everyone.

Things to See and Do in Calabar

  • Obudu Mountain Resort: Take a ride in a cable car through the misty mountains, hike along scenic trails, or just enjoy the cool, fresh air. The views are absolutely breathtaking!
  • Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary: This sanctuary is home to rare animals like lowland gorillas and drill monkeys. For a thrilling experience, walk across the canopy walkway high above the rainforest.

Food to Try

Calabar is known for its delicious Efik cuisine. Don’t miss out on local dishes like Afang Soup and Edikang Ikong, which are filled with fresh veggies, seafood, and traditional spices. These meals tell a story about the Efik people—you’ll understand once you taste them!

Best Time to Visit

The city is especially lively in December during the Calabar Carnival, Africa’s biggest street festival. With colorful costumes, lively music, and energetic parades, this event showcases the rich culture and joy of Nigeria.

If you’ve ever dreamed of going on a safari, Yankari National Park is the perfect place to make it happen. Located in northern Nigeria, this vast wildlife reserve offers a chance to see some of Africa’s most amazing animals while enjoying the peace of the savannah.

  • Explore Ancient Caves: Visit caves decorated with prehistoric rock paintings, offering a glimpse into Nigeria’s distant past.

When to Go

The best time to visit is during the dry season (November to May). During this time, it’s easier to spot animals as they gather near water sources.
