A New Chapter in DEA Leadership

Veteran DEA agent Derek S. Maltz has taken the helm as Acting Administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Announced by the Trump administration, this appointment places Maltz, a seasoned law enforcement professional with decades of experience, at the forefront of America’s fight against drug trafficking and the fentanyl crisis.

Bringing Experience and Dedication to the Role

Maltz, a career special agent who served the DEA for 28 years before retiring in 2014, is no stranger to high-stakes operations.

His leadership roles, including Chief of the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force and head of the DEA’s Special Operations Division, highlight his extensive background in combating drug cartels and fostering international cooperation.

With a reputation for tenacity and strategic insight, Maltz’s return to the DEA is seen as a pivotal move in addressing pressing challenges.

“This appointment is the honor of my lifetime,” Maltz stated during his announcement. “DEA will continue to be relentless in pursuing the cartels that threaten this great nation.”

Fentanyl Crisis: The Immediate Challenge

Maltz’s appointment comes at a critical time, as the U.S. grapples with an escalating fentanyl crisis. According to the DEA, synthetic opioids like fentanyl were involved in 68% of the 107,000 drug overdose deaths in 2022. The agency’s laboratory tests revealed that 7 out of 10 counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl contain a potentially lethal dose.

Residents of Tucson, Arizona, and beyond have felt the devastating impact of fentanyl, with local communities rallying for awareness and preventive action.

In 2023, King County, Washington, reported 1,067 fentanyl-related deaths—a 47% increase from the previous year. Such statistics underscore the urgent need for leadership equipped to handle this crisis.

Strengthening International Partnerships

A hallmark of Maltz’s career has been his ability to build strong partnerships with international law enforcement agencies. Under his leadership at the Special Operations Division, the DEA transformed its collaboration with global partners to disrupt drug trafficking networks.

As Acting Administrator, Maltz is expected to expand these efforts, ensuring that the DEA’s international footprint remains one of the largest among federal agencies.

Advocacy and Awareness: A Personal Mission

Beyond enforcement, Maltz has dedicated himself to advocacy and public awareness. He has worked closely with families affected by fentanyl, amplifying their stories to highlight the dangers of synthetic opioids.

His approach includes creating networks of community partners to educate the public and prevent further tragedies.

“We want every American to understand the threat we face and know exactly how DEA is working to protect you,”

Maltz emphasized.

Focus Areas Under Maltz’s Leadership

Maltz’s leadership style emphasizes collaboration, grit, and results. His plans for the DEA include:

  • Enhancing Awareness Campaigns: Partnering with local communities to spread education about the dangers of fentanyl.
  • Targeting Cartels: Utilizing intelligence and enforcement strategies to dismantle major drug trafficking networks.
  • Supporting Families: Collaborating with affected families to drive policy changes and preventive measures.

Fentanyl Crisis: By the Numbers

Metric Statistic
Overdose Deaths in 2022 107,000
Fentanyl’s Share of Deaths 68%
Counterfeit Pills with Lethal Dose 7 out of 10
King County Deaths (2023) 1,067
Increase in Deaths (Year-on-Year) 47%

A Veteran’s Commitment to Public Safety

Maltz’s career has been marked by a relentless pursuit of justice and a deep commitment to public safety. His return to the DEA represents not only continuity but also a reinvigorated approach to tackling drug trafficking and its devastating effects on communities.

With his focus on collaboration and results, residents of Tucson and across the nation can expect decisive action in the fight against fentanyl and other illicit drugs.

As Acting Administrator, Maltz’s leadership is poised to bring hope to families, strength to law enforcement, and a unified effort to address one of the most pressing issues of our time.
