The Canadian government has expanded its sanctions under the Special Economic Measures (Haiti) Regulations, targeting three individuals—Dimitri Hérard, Jeantel Joseph, and Jeff Larose—to address the worsening situation in Haiti.

These measures aim to hold accountable those undermining peace and stability in the region.

Canada’s Sanctions on Haitian Individuals

The Canadian government, led by Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, announced new sanctions against three individuals linked to instability in Haiti.

These sanctions include asset freezes and restrictions on transactions with Canadians. These measures render the sanctioned individuals inadmissible to Canada.

The decision reflects Canada’s ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in Haiti through targeted economic actions.

Canadian Support for Haiti

Canada has maintained strong diplomatic ties with Haiti since 1954. The country has been actively involved in UN peace missions and continues to support international efforts aimed at restoring order in Haiti.

Considerations for Canadian Stakeholders

  • Canadian businesses must comply with prohibitions on transactions involving sanctioned individuals.
  • The sanctions may influence other countries to adopt similar measures against those destabilizing Haiti.
  • Continued support for Haiti could effect Canada’s foreign aid budgets and humanitarian initiatives.

Ministerial Statement

Mélanie Joly emphasized the importance of international cooperation, stating,

Canada remains committed to supporting Haiti and its people. We urge the international community to stand with Canada in holding accountable those who fuel violence and instability in Haiti.

In Conclusion

The expansion of sanctions by Canada highlights its dedication to addressing instability in Haiti while reinforcing its role as a global leader in promoting peace.

By working closely with international partners, Canada aims to ensure accountability for those undermining stability and support efforts towards a peaceful resolution.
