The UK government has launched a campaign on Zalo, a Vietnamese messaging platform, to warn against people smuggling.

This initiative aims to protect lives by deterring dangerous crossings and is part of broader efforts to combat irregular migration, coinciding with the Organised Immigration Crime Summit in London.

UK’s Strategic Move Against People Smuggling

The UK government has taken a significant step in its fight against illegal migration by launching an advertising campaign on Zalo, a popular Vietnamese messaging platform.

This initiative is designed to counteract the false claims made by people smuggling gangs and is part of a larger strategy to address irregular migration.

The campaign specifically targets Vietnamese nationals, who are among the top groups crossing the Channel illegally.

International Collaboration Efforts

The launch of this campaign coincides with the Organised Immigration Crime Summit held in London. This summit brings together delegates from over 40 countries to strengthen international cooperation against organized immigration crime.

Representatives from major social media platforms such as Meta, X, and TikTok are also participating in discussions aimed at addressing the online promotion of irregular migration.

Highlights of the Campaign

  • First-time use of Zalo for UK government advertising
  • Focus on debunking smugglers’ false promises
  • Partnerships with social media giants for broader reach
  • Support from Vietnamese community leaders in the UK
  • Aims to promote legal migration routes

The Role of Technology in Migration Control

This campaign underscores the critical role technology plays in both facilitating and combating illegal migration.

By leveraging platforms like Zalo, which boasts over 77 million monthly users, the UK government aims to reach a wide audience and effectively communicate the dangers associated with trusting smugglers.

The involvement of tech companies highlights their responsibility in curbing illegal activities promoted online.

Quotes

Dame Angela Eagle, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, stated:

“People smugglers are always looking for new ways to peddle their vile trade and we are exposing their lies at every opportunity.” She emphasized that “this government is securing our borders and delivering on our Plan for Change.”

Quynh Nguyen, Founder and CEO of the Vietnamese Family Partnership, expressed support:

“Zalo is widely used in Vietnam and introducing adverts on the channel will help reach many more vulnerable people.” He added that “our community understands the importance of legal routes.”
