The UK Department for Transport has unveiled the First of a Kind (FOAK) competition, offering £5 million to foster innovative rail projects.

Launching on April 7, 2025, this initiative aims to enhance passenger experience through advanced technologies, focusing on safety, accessibility, and sustainability.

Driving Innovation in Rail

The FOAK competition is a significant step towards modernizing the UK’s rail network. By emphasizing projects that improve passenger safety and accessibility while promoting sustainability, the initiative aligns with the government’s Plan for Change.

This focus ensures that funded projects address real-world challenges faced by passengers daily. Innovate UK has collaborated closely with industry leaders to identify these challenges, ensuring that the solutions developed are practical and impactful.

Past winners of the competition have seen their innovations widely adopted across the rail sector, leading to improved efficiency and reliability.

Benefits for Passengers

  • Enhanced safety measures for a more secure travel experience
  • Improved accessibility features like level boarding for disabled passengers
  • Sustainable practices reducing environmental impact
  • AI-driven solutions increasing operational efficiency
  • Collaborative efforts ensuring seamless technology integration

A Legacy of Success

The FOAK competition builds on previous rounds that have supported 179 projects since its inception. This year’s emphasis on passenger experience reflects broader UK transport policies prioritizing accessibility and safety.

The initiative’s success could set a precedent internationally, encouraging other countries to adopt similar approaches in modernizing their rail networks.

Voices from the Industry

Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy, said:

“This competition addresses the biggest challenges facing the rail industry, taking cutting-edge technology and bringing it onto the railways by turning ideas into reality.

This funding builds a platform for boosting innovation on the railway, giving new technologies a chance to succeed, supporting economic growth as part of the Plan for Change.

We are creating a railway that works better for the people who use it and making lasting progress for passengers and freight by improving accessibility, safety and reliability to prevent disruption before it happens.”

Mike Biddle, Executive Director for Net Zero at Innovate UK, said

“The innovations sought through this competition will help create a more accessible, safer and efficient railway system throughout the UK.

The competition highlights the importance of collaboration with industry partners to deliver high-maturity demonstration to ensure seamless integration into the existing railway infrastructure.

Delivered by Innovate UK on behalf of the Department for Transport, the competition aims to identify and support outstanding, innovative solutions. In previous rounds, companies from across the UK have demonstrated the creativity and impact of their ideas through live demonstrations.”

Sustainability at Its Core

The focus on greener railways not only benefits passengers but also contributes to broader environmental goals.

By integrating AI solutions and sustainable practices into existing infrastructure, this initiative could influence other transport sectors to adopt more eco-friendly methods.
