Thousands of UK jobseekers are benefiting from expanded workplace training opportunities, as the government increases support to 100,000 tailored training places this financial year.

This initiative aims to enhance skills and employment rates across sectors with high vacancies, such as hospitality and construction, providing significant benefits for individuals and the economy.

Expanding Opportunities for Jobseekers

The UK government’s commitment to boosting workforce skills is evident in its plan to expand the Sector-Based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs) to 100,000 places this financial year.

This expansion follows a successful previous year where over 86,640 training places were provided, surpassing the initial target of 80,000.

By focusing on sectors with high vacancies like hospitality and construction, SWAPs aim to improve employment prospects for thousands of individuals.

Benefits for Participants

  • Increased access to job training in high-demand sectors
  • Improved financial stability through better employment prospects
  • Enhanced career advancement opportunities
  • Long-term job retention and higher earnings compared to non-participants
  • Positive impact on national economic growth and living standards

The Success of SWAPs Programs

The SWAPs initiative has proven effective since its launch in April 2021, providing over 370,000 training places. Participants tend to stay in their jobs longer and earn more than those who do not participate in these programs.

The introduction of a Hospitality SWAPs pilot in 26 new areas further demonstrates the program’s adaptability and focus on addressing specific skill gaps.

A Broader Economic Strategy

This expansion aligns with broader economic strategies aimed at increasing the National Living Wage and creating more secure jobs through legislative measures like the Employment Rights Bill.

These efforts collectively contribute to making work more rewarding and sustainable while supporting economic growth across the UK.

Industry Leaders Comments

Work and Pensions Secretary, Liz Kendall MP said:

“SWAPs help people to stay in work for longer and boost their pay, while getting businesses loyal staff with the right skills.

That’s why we are boosting the scheme even further next year, giving even more people access to these life-changing opportunities.

This kind of support is crucial to get people back to work, as we continue to unlock growth, improve living standards and break down barriers to opportunity for people across the country with our Plan for Change.”

Speaking about her experience on the programme, Sophie said:

“I really enjoyed the experience. I’ve worked in cleaning positions in the past, but this programme was unique and allowed me to see what working for Amey would feel like. I’m really proud of my work.

Because of the great team here, I want to do a good job. When my sister told me she was looking for a job, I got her in touch with my Operations Manager and now she also works as a domestic assistant at another contract.”
