The UK and Kenya have inaugurated a cotton processing facility in Lamu County, set to create 5,000 jobs by 2028.

This initiative aims to reduce Kenya’s dependency on imported cotton, enhance local production, and align with sustainable practices, benefiting both nations economically and environmentally.

Boosting Employment and Trade

The newly launched cotton processing facility in Lamu County is expected to significantly impact the local economy by creating 5,000 jobs over the next three years.

This development will provide employment opportunities in agriculture and manufacturing sectors, directly benefiting the residents of Lamu County.

The project also aims to reduce Kenya’s reliance on imported cotton, which currently stands at 90%, thereby strengthening trade ties between the UK and Kenya.

Making an Impact

By doubling local production from 3,000 to 6,000 bales annually, this initiative is poised to lower costs for UK-Kenya trade partnerships.

The reduction in import dependency could lead to more competitive pricing for textiles sourced from Kenya.

Additionally, this project aligns with the UK’s green investment priorities by cutting transportation emissions and supporting climate goals.

Focus on Sustainability and Gender Equality

The £43 million Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED) program underpins this project with a strong emphasis on sustainability.

By reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 262 metric tons annually—equivalent to removing 57 gasoline-powered cars from the road—the initiative supports both countries’ climate objectives.

Furthermore, it prioritizes gender equality by ensuring that women make up at least 50% of the workforce in this new facility.

Opportunities for Growth

  • Creation of 5,000 jobs within three years
  • Doubling local cotton production capacity
  • Reducing reliance on imported textiles
  • Supporting gender equality with a focus on female employment
  • Aligning with climate goals through reduced carbon emissions
  • Enhancing UK-Kenya trade relations

A Strategic Partnership for Future Growth

This project is part of a broader strategy under the UK-Kenya Strategic Partnership (2020-2025), which seeks to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

For UK investors and professionals interested in sustainable manufacturing and climate-resilient projects, this signals new opportunities within Kenya’s growing textile sector.
