Nearly 300,000 UK taxpayers filed their Self Assessment tax returns for the 2024-2025 tax year within the first week of April 2025, setting a new record.

This early filing trend allows individuals to receive refunds sooner and manage their finances better, highlighting a shift in financial planning among UK taxpayers.

Record-Breaking Early Filings

The recent surge in early tax return filings marks a significant change in how UK taxpayers approach their financial obligations.

Between April 6 and April 12, 2025, an unprecedented 299,419 returns were submitted. This represents an increase of over 28,000 compared to the same period in 2020.

The trend underscores growing awareness of the benefits associated with early filing.

Advantages for Taxpayers

  • Receive tax refunds faster once returns are processed
  • Set up budget payment plans to spread out tax bills
  • Avoid last-minute stress by gaining clarity on tax liabilities earlier
  • Improve cash flow management for self-employed individuals and landlords
  • Prepare for upcoming digital record-keeping requirements starting in April 2026

Financial Planning Benefits

This shift towards early filing is not just about meeting deadlines; it reflects a broader change in financial planning strategies among UK taxpayers.

For many self-employed workers and landlords, this approach offers greater flexibility and reduces stress. By organizing finances throughout the year, individuals can better manage their cash flow and avoid last-minute pressures.

Simplifying Tax Management with Digital Tools

The introduction of Making Tax Digital (MTD) from April 2026 will require sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 to maintain digital records and submit quarterly updates.

This policy aims to streamline tax management through technology adoption. As businesses prepare for these changes, they may find themselves adopting advanced financial software sooner than anticipated.

Insights from Experts

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, emphasized that early filing allows business owners to focus more on growth rather than worrying about taxes.

She said,

“Filing your Self Assessment early means you can spend more time growing your business and doing the things you love, rather than worrying about your tax return.

You too can join the thousands of customers who have already done their tax return for the 2024 to 2025 tax year by searching ‘Self Assessment’ on GOV.UK and get started today.”

Jade Milbourne, a small business owner, shared her experience:

“Filing early means that I have plenty of time to pay my tax bill. I set aside money from my wage each month and pay it as soon as I can, but also have the flexibility and time to save up more money, if needed.

I always find the more organised you are throughout the year, the less stressful it is to complete my tax return.”

To Sum Up

The record number of early filers highlights a positive shift towards proactive financial management among UK taxpayers.

With upcoming digital requirements set to transform how taxes are managed, embracing these changes now could lead to smoother transitions later. Early filing not only eases immediate stress but also sets a foundation for future compliance.
