The Environment Agency’s £7 million beach management scheme will replenish up to 500,000 cubic metres of sand on Lincolnshire’s coast starting May 11, 2025.

This initiative aims to protect thousands of homes and businesses from tidal flooding while supporting the local tourism economy by maintaining sandy beaches.

Protecting Lincolnshire’s Coastal Communities

The annual beach nourishment project is a critical measure for safeguarding Lincolnshire’s coastal communities.

By replenishing sand on beaches between Saltfleet and Gibraltar Point, the scheme reduces flood risk for approximately 20,000 homes and 1,700 businesses. This effort not only protects property values but also supports livelihoods in tourism and agriculture.

For residents and visitors alike, these replenished beaches serve as natural barriers against tidal flooding. The project helps prevent property damage and minimizes disruptions to daily life.

However, due to much of Lincolnshire being at or below sea level, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant by signing up for free flood warnings.

Benefits for Local Economy

  • Reduces flood risk for 20,000 homes and 1,700 businesses
  • Supports local tourism by maintaining attractive sandy beaches
  • Protects agricultural land spanning 35,000 hectares
  • Saves millions in potential repair costs and insurance claims
  • Encourages community preparedness through free flood warnings

A Long-Standing Commitment to Flood Defence

This beach management scheme has been a staple of the Environment Agency’s efforts since 1994. It aligns with the UK government’s broader £2.65 billion investment in flood defences nationwide from 2023-2025.

The project reflects a long-term strategy addressing coastal erosion and flooding risks exacerbated by climate change.

The Role of Beach Nourishment in Flood Protection

Nourishment Project Details

Aspect Description
Total Sand Volume (cubic metres) 200,000 – 500,000 annually
Total Funding (£) 7 million per year
Total Protected Area (hectares) 35,000 hectares of land protected from flooding

“Our current coastal management approach of re-nourishing the beaches between Saltfleet and Gibraltar Point is vital to managing tidal flood risk for Lincolnshire,” said Deborah Higton, Flood Risk Manager at the Environment Agency.

“As well as maintaining the county’s sandy beaches for us all to enjoy.”
